Unknown UK? Course Pics
« on: April 27, 2006, 09:31:16 AM »
We were asked if we could identify the following course which we believe would be in Surrey or Berkshire County, based on the physicality of the topography and trees.

Has anyone any information on this course, which might not even exist anymore?

WOW

I have no fricking idea!  Some of looks like Addington (3rd down look like across the 16th green to the 17th), but it doesn't fit.

New course at Addington?  NLE

RT,

I hope you can figure it out and that it still exists.  It looks wonderful.  Come on, Paul.  You've gotta figure this one out!

I think these match.  Look at the mound in the background of the 17th green:

Thank Brent I think it's definitely Addington Old.

This is an open (slightly side on) view of 16th green, you would now be in the trees:

Modified 7th green?

Approach to 15th?  But it doesn't have as steep a drop now.

Thanks Paul,

I think this is no. 5 in this case.

And my first pic would be the 12th green it seems.

This is the second time in a few days I have been tempted by opinions and views of the Addington.

Anyone interested in seeing if an afternoon game on Monday next week is possible.  If so, IM me.  I assume the course is south of London.

I don't think the 5th is steep enough.  Yes that must be the 12th green.

The comparison of the two old 12th pics is interesting.  The pics you posted are clearly during construction and they then went further with the tree clearing.

Interesting that they shaved the bank on the 7th.

Some amazinc pics RT.  Quite a find and thanks for posting them.

PT,

Probably 13 and not 5, look at what appears to be a tee in the foreground, indicating a par-3.  Probably is 13.

Interesting how much the 16th green has shrunk.  I think perhaps the 12th too.

Nice to find these just as the course is to be sold - it'll help them identify best sites for lakes (with fountains), cart paths, and which trees might best be felled for the construction of condos.  Can't wait.

Fantastic pictures thanks for posting them.  Well done Paul to rise to the challenge and work it out - it wasn't at all as easy to spot as some might think.

If any new owner wants to improve the look of the place (the early holes at least aren’t as pretty as many Heathland courses) then he should get the chainsaws out and reveal the amazing changes in the land.  Of the 'London' courses I've seen, only St George's Hill has anything like that amount of movement.  Judging by the pictures that would be a very welcome 'improvement'.

I thought there might be some MacKenzie there, as one of the par 3s looks a lot like #7 at Cypress Point.  The fourth photo to be precise, tee at the same height, green roughly the same design.

Bill, I am not sure if there is a unique style to any of our so-called Golden Age architects.  They all had individual traits, yet their paramaters were much the same.  They also had astonishing vision, as Tom Williamsen is finding on his tour of the B-class courses in this neck of the woods.  These will never challenge for the top 100 in the UK, but he is getting to the heart of Colt, MacKenzie, Ray, Herd, Barrie.... Wait to examine what Tom may eventually report.

Great thread. Wow.

The loss of the contouring in the fairways may have been inevitable, but it is a shame nonetheless. And there is nothing harder to restore.

That's so true.  It looks like a great course now, but then--wow, what a course.
