What makes a good day of golf?
« on: February 09, 2006, 08:37:48 PM »
What kind of golf do you like?  Or are you a mixed bag?

1. A game of passion and tradition or...

2. A game of social recreation...

3. Or a mixture?

**What 5 things do you want most when you play golf?
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Definitely a mixture for me:

1.  A course with variety of holes and interesting greens
2.  The ability to walk anytime I want, including with a Sun speed cart
3.  A fast and firm course with a variety of options on most shots
4.  Buddies who play with me and a group regularly and like to play match play
5.  The opportunity to travel and see new courses

And the bonus.............

6.  Maximum 4 hour rounds (and criticized for that by the guys in the grillroom)

Bill,

I'm with you on firm turf and playing with people you enjoy and play at a good rate. I love some risk-reward options and a couple do or die shots like 10 at Pine Valley.
I also love to travel and play a variety of courses. I couldn't play the same course every week.

Passionate about having fun.. I've declared that 2006 is going to be a year that I'm not keeping score.. i'm still playing match play and counting against par on a given hole, but i'm not adding them up..

I prefer a sport that is unpredictable, element influenced, and extremely taxing on the inner worlings of one's mind. Not a game, played for developer's profit, on canvases ill-suited for either.

I like:
Good company with a bit of friendly competition
Affordable and walkable
F&f conditions
Variety (strategic, penal, heroic, blind, short, long holes)
3.5 hour games

Cheater addition:  Beautiful surroundings including the house.

Ciao

1 - A fair, fun and challenging course.
2 - A timely round, with little or no wait between shots
3 - The opportunity to walk and not be required to take a cart
4 - The absence on any "crackberries" or cell phones on any one in the group
5 - A number of flush shots!

Ding-Ding-Ding. We have a winner! Any day with all five of these elements is a great day to be alive.

Some of us have adapted to only occasional doses of #4 and there's something to be said for a solo round beginning before the sun rises. But for my part those are the five things to be devoutly pursued at every opportunity available.

Ditto Rich and Brent... not much else to say, assuming that what makes me smile is firm and fast, and variable weather conditions.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Its a mix for me, with the slight edge to social recreation, however in a form that I'm rather passionate about!

My five things:
1. Beautiful surroundings
2. Good camaraderie
3. Good competition (I like Rich's addition of internal/external)
4. Getting to play new courses and see new places.
5. Working with young golfers and teaching the game. Seeing the smiles on their faces as they improve or shoot a new career best is priceless!

Any day playing golf is good golf.

Prety much all passion.  Cameraderie best after, doesn't detract from the flow, the spirituality.

Great golf:

Interesting routing, nice walk
Interesting green complexes
Interesting strategies
speed of course
speed of play, I prefer to play two-ball or three-ball

I expect to be an outlier here.
