What if Santa said you had been bad in 05'?
« on: December 22, 2005, 11:06:34 AM »
What if Santa says "You were bad in 05." Maybe you left the family
to play golf too often. Perhaps you over-declared the value of your Goodwill donation. Worse yet, maybe you inadvertently lost your cool
with one of your fellow GCA brethren. In any case, Santa wants to banish you to a lifetime of golfing hell at one course, and one course only. What is your personal version of golfing purgatory?

I'm trying to think of mine. I've played some pretty sorry courses. But as they say "a bad day of golf..........".

#2 - Sandpines, which has such an unbelievably deceptive marketing picture
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

For me any golf is a day well spent, no matter where.

So I'm gonna go along the lines Bill Gayne has started.

It would have to be NGLA.

Why you say?  Golf hell?  Has the man gone insane?

Well remember this is a lifetime.  As great as that course is, eventually one would want to branch out.  And having Shinnecock and Sebonack right there IN SIGHT, so close but yet so far... well that would be the greatest golf hell.

Kinda reminds me of my daily commute a few years ago, parking next to SFGC every day.

Near Ontario California, surrounded by Dairy Cow Paddocks. The course happened to be the collection point for all the run-off and stank.

Oh, I'd be on the endless cart ride fun of Jim Fazio's "Country Club of the Poconos at (cue up echo) BIG Ridge".

The cart path from the 1st tee to the 18th green is 12 miles long.  I shit you not.

The humorously ironic thing it that even though the course routing covers about half the state of Pennsylvania, Mr. Fazio was unable to find a single good golf hole in the bunch and some of the worst I've ever seen.

Everyone has to see it...just once.

Mike-
Did you not say at one time that some holes call for something like 8 iron of the tee, then 3 wood?

Some may find this offending but I'd say prepetual rounds at Osprey Point. I was bannished there one spring when the Ocean was closed. It was;

Expensive - $205
Uninspired
Bland
Unchallenging
Heavily built upon

I have heard people rave about the course and I can't for the life of me figure out why.

Yes, the 350 yard 4th (not sure if they've changed the hole numbering) when I played it required a 130 yard layup off the tee to stay short of a wetlands bog filled with 7-8 foot tall reeds.  To the left and right were mature woods so that was not a option.  That left a completely blind, full-carry second shot to a green about 210 yards on the other side of said bog, which stopped just short of the green.

Oh, and there were mature woods just off the right and behind the green and a boulder field on the left.

The thing I really appreciated is that the architect didn't try to "build" holes there and tamper too much with Mother Nature...instead, he just "found" them.

It is always a privilege to spend time at any golf course. No doubt about it.

But if I had to pick something in this case it would be the south course of La Cala in Spain. I will never understand why they chose to build a golf course at that site. It would make an interesting ski slope. But to use it as a ground for golf... naah.

You know you've been on this site too long when you just diss a very deserving course only to look at the "Just the Facts" thread and find that almost simultaneously the Superintendent of said dissed course just posted.   :P ;D

Man...I must have really been bad this year!

A mandatory 12 pm tee time even at Pebble with 6 hour rounds might drive me over the edge.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

He’d make me play the K Club’s Palmer Course at 250 euro’s a pop.

But because he’s really got it in for me he’d only allow me one ball per round.

The first? OK, but then there’s water on every hole  :o.

(OK just kidding there’s no water on 11 or 12. Phew what a relief it would be to make it that far).

The National at Reynolds Plantation - a week after overseeding the fairways for winter.

In gorgeous, dry October weather the course was super-saturated and the new winter grass was tall, but too new to cut.  It's the first time I've ever played a course where you could lose a ball in the fairway and you purposefully aimed for the rough because you got a much better lie in the dormant Bermuda.

That is really a one in ten thousand shot of bad luck man. I am still laughing. I had to flip over to the other thread to see if it was true.

Merry Christmas
