The Concession (Nicklaus)- Sarasota, FL
« on: December 15, 2005, 11:51:26 PM »
This new private high-end real estate golf course will open next month. Here is a preview. Excerpts from today's Sarasota Herald Tribune:

In an exclusive sneak preview Wednesday morning given by director of golf Jimmy Wright, the Jack Nicklaus Signature course has lived up to its hype.

"Jack outdid himself on this one," said Concession developer Kevin Daves.

From the back tees, the Florida State Golf Association gave The Concession its highest numbers: 155 slope and 77.6 course rating.

Maybe so.  Though the article seems to mostly quote the developers and director of golf to prove that statement.

I'd like to see the rating/slope for the other tees. Here are some more tidbits:

The Concession is going to be difficult from the black tees, but very playable from the members blue tees (6,600 yards), senior white tees (6,050) and women's red tees (5,030).

"That's what we are the most proud of," said Wright. "It will be the hardest course in Florida from the back tees, but from everywhere else, it will be challenging but a pleasure to play."

The two nines have their own personality. The front nine has more trees and less water, and the back nine is wide open but more water. In typical Nicklaus style, he gave the golfer ample room to hit the ball off the tee. However, the greens are undulating and small.

The course is built on some 520 acres with no out-of-bounds stakes.

"You can hit it 300 yards off line and still have a shot," said Wright.

I'm still looking for a director of golf of a newly opened course to say: "Well, you know, Mr. (insert architect's name here) was really never on site and I think he's created a marginal product that a few people will enjoy, but hardly anyone will love."

Now that would be a quote worth printing!

Good work Paul. I'm not very up to date...

I saw something on TV about this course. I think the whole consession thing was good sportsmanship, but they go on about it way too much.
