Best/worst course names
« on: December 10, 2005, 09:58:49 AM »
The "Prepositional Golf Courses" thread made me think of what my favorite golf course name is.  There are some pretty unusual ones, but my favorite is the Gog Magog Golf Club.  And for minimalism, I quite like The Country Club (Brookline) or The Golf Club (OH).  The worst, for me are the common ones.  I looked on golfcourse.com and found 38 different courses with  the name 'Rolling Hills' incorporated into the title.

My least favorite golf course name, of those I've heard, is Blissful Meadows.  It just sounds more like an amusement park for toddlers than a golf course.  I've never played the course, mind you, but the name doesn't make it sound all that great.

My best friend assigns most golf courses to the naming archetype:

*Living thing* *Geographic feature* (Golf/Country) Club

Cherry Valley CC
Mountain Valley GC

I was also always fond of the name, "Rolling Turf Country Club."

The course may not even exist anymore: "Links at Twin Towers".
Charmingly named after the 2 Limerick, PA nuclear cooling towers that apparently loom over the golf course.

Links at Twin Towers is now know as Linfield National. The name was changed after 9/11.

For that matter, any course other than ANGC and National GL         that has "National" in the the name should be classified as highly pretentious.

Steve-agreed on the "national" conotation. When I hear  "--- National"
I immediately come up with a certain type of image.

How about "International"?

Even worse...Raccoon International

"Possum Trot Golf Club" in Myrtle Beach is a good one. (Do they
really "trot"?) At least they were original... ;D

Scottsdale CC was renamed "Starfire GC". One wonders why a million dollar name — "Scottsdale" — got tossed aside.

I thought "Furry Creek" was a pretty bad name, but my worst is "Bayonet at Puppy Creek"  As Shack said in Grounds for Golf, "why is the puppy in a creek?"  I follow with "and why did you bayonet it?"

Seriously, thats got to be some sort of bad compromise...

I only thought Furry Creek was a bad name until I played it.  After that, I forgot about how bad the name was and focused my disappointment on the course.

I heard it billed as "The Pebble Beach of Canada."

Don't believe the hype.  One hole jutting out into a large body of water does not a masterful design make.

Yeah, that's what I heard too about furry creek...silly at times...there's one hole you have to play 6-iron off the tee, then three-metal over water.

I have this general rule, if a course calls itself "the augusta," "the pinehurst" or "the pebble," run in the other direction.  I also generally dont play a course with an animal in the name...and yes, that includes John Daly's Wicked Stick...

I like Glenelg in Australia.  Probably in the top 10 of palindromic golf courses.

Furry Creek is a terrible name and among the worst golf course's ever built in Canada.
But there's a worse name in Canada -- Frog's Breath. It is a privately owned course in Northern Ontario.

I have suggested to clients inclined to use the National label, and even International, to go one up to "Galactic" , 'Intergalactic" or  "Universal".....

Of course, no takers yet on Tiddly Links  Intergalactic.......I will let you know.

New St. Andrews
Royal New Kent (especially now that's it's "The Tradition Golf Club at Royal New Kent" -- YEEECH!)
Muirfield Village
Olde Scotland Links (in Bridgewater, Mass.; built on marshy land with no trees, which apparently makes it like Scotland  ???)

or any other name whose primary purpose is to copy the name of some other golf course or invoke the image of some other golf courses.

I dont have any more to offer, but I would like everyone's take on a name a friend is considerng.

Lost Souls G.C.

Now, before you stop laughing, there is ancient lore about a river of the same name in the area.

Any thoughts on Lost Souls?

Growling Frog GC has to be rght up there.

In the northern suburbs of Melbourne, it is a new Graham Marsh design, and quite good. It takes its name from the local native amphibians which make homes in the creek on the front nine.

In DFW we have two city courses named after the local farmers who once owned the land, neither as elegant as Baltus Roll -

Ditto Golf Course (Arlington)
ZBoaz Golf Course (Ft Worth)

Wouldn't Ditto be a good name for a replica course?

How about Autocad National for the gca who does it soley by plan? Or Shapers Golf Club when the contractor has more influence than the GCA?

A few years ago, one of my courses was approached by Pepsi who were offering a fee to call the course "The Pepsi Challenge at Giants Ridge,"  Is it only a matter of time before some cash strapped golf course or management company accepts such and offer?
