From St Andrews to San Andreas
« on: November 22, 2005, 01:36:51 PM »
Weather permitting (massive snowstorm predicted for the UK this week), on saturday we fly to Nirvana, (well, California).

A week today...what I've waited most of my golfing life for.

In my mind's eye, I have built a vision of what to expect. No doubt it is completely wrong, but for what it's worth, here it is:

A morning drive along a winding, forested road which affords only occasional glimpses of ocean, sand and trees. The air is heavy with the mingled scents of Pine and Cypress underscored with the salty iodine of the shore beyond.

We turn into a small, unpretentious entrance onto a loose-surfaced roadway, covered in needles and pine cones, and begin to track towards the west, towards the Sea.

On either side, golf holes begin to appear out of the terrain; a grand vista at first, then smaller, more intricate details close by the road reveal themselves. The quality of the design and of the maintenance is so perfect that it takes my eyes a good few moments to adjust to the subtlety of the contrasts, to the masterly blending of the shapes, colours and textures of this place.

Up ahead, the rustic, small-scaled Clubhouse is glimpsed between the silvery tree trunks, appearing dappled in the shade cast by the morning sun.

In almost religious, hushed reverence we unpack ourselves and our golfing equipment and make our way to the first tee. Not many people are around: a few other golfers - similarly, and somewhat eerily, quiet, also prepare for their day. I smile to myself, assuming they if they are half as excited as I am, what they really want to do is to whoop and holler and scream as loudly as they can, to do something to break the almost unbearable tension...

Boy, sometimes I scare myself!

Now, where's the emoticon for 'Excited Scotsman'?

Martin:

Have you done this already?

That was scarily perfect for how the experience goes.

But that being said, there are few if any for whom the reality didn't meet or exceed expectations.  Hard to believe, I know.  But it does happen.

...and then you top it into the hedge that hides (or in your case, protects) the road. ;)

It is, Martin, the most VIVID place I've ever seen.  Hooray for you!

May the road rise up to meet you.  You go, man.

I'm knocking on my wood desk in my office (real wood to, no veneer ...) so that I don't jinx the weather gods but seriously, we have been having fantastic weather the past 3 or 4 weeks.  Clear, sunny skies, brisk mornings, perfect golf weather ... and it looks like it will continue.

Ps:  Gotta love the internet and those ad serving gremlins, you pull up the weather forecast and they serve an ad selling storm gear, now isn't that a cruel joke. ;)

Kindred soul FBD -

Enjoy your trip!  I am still basking in the afterglow of my weekend on the Peninsula...weather was absolutely perfect.  I did not know 18% humidity was possible.  ;)  And dammit Pebble and MPCC at dusk look unreal.

BTW if you find a beat up Blue Max at Pasa, pick it up and send it back to Orlando.  ;D

Martin,

What is your itinerary for play?

If you need to get on a course or a match, let everyone here know for goodness sakes. Don't you think that someof us would like to show you that the real home of golf is in America & not that little village by the sea that you live outside of?  ;D

Philip:

Rest assured Martin is being taken care of by the locals here in NorCal.  You can feel confident he will be seeing much of the best of one of the great homes of golf.

Unfortunately though methinks he's gonna fly right over you...

Tom,

He should be made to carry everyone's bag, then he'll feel right at home! He's the second-best caddy at Kingsbarns... right behind a certain fireman!  ;D

For goodness sakes Marty, make sure you have a proper warm-up before you hit that first tee... I'm afraid you might pull a groin muscle, if you haven't already!  The last thing you need to hear at that point is "what a pity" ... ;) ;D

FBD,

What dates will you be in California? Will you be in the southern part of the state at all? I will be back out there working 12/05 through 12/09.

Martin, The reality is much cooler than this imagined
sequence. And while the small pro shop and quiant setting are nice, your golfing soul will not be fully stirred until you walk acrosss the road after hitting your first tee shot.

Have fun, Martin.

If I had to guess - and it would be a guess, I haven't had the pleasure - I'd guess there will be less reverance than you anticipate; it will probably be a more relaxed appreciation of the day.

The biggest change you will experience is when you get off the plane and are confronted by that non-existent thing from whence you came called the sun. :)

If you can't snap any physical pictures, make sure you take plenty of mental ones.

George

I thought he would be landing at San Francisco Airport, and then going down to Monterey.  I've visited these areas in July and late september, and my recollection is minimal sun, at least until perhaps 2pm.  It might be sunnier in December.  I recall buying one of those fleecy jackets within the first day or so of visiting San Francisco - perhaps 15 degrees celsius (although it was 30 degrees a few kilomteres inland).

Was it Mark Twain that said words to the effect of 'the worst winter I ever experienced in the USA was the summer I spent in San Francisco'? :o

That said, the weather is absolutely and emminently perfect for golf.

Sir Boab, that whole Scotsman bare legged thing goes back quite a few years...according to depictions.  Best not get young master Marty too hyped up, least he show up at the hallowed field with his face painted bloody Braveheart style!   ;) ;D

Martin, it's a good thing you are escaping Europe.  I am in susposedly sunny Tuscany for Thanksgiving week.  Today it was 2° C with snow flurries in Siena!

Have a great time in California!
