Les 5 meilleurs en France
« on: November 13, 2005, 10:00:40 AM »
I have a fond prediliction for France in many ways, none the least is the yearly Tour de France as well as the classiques, some well constructed Godard and Truffauts, and the Eric Rohmer here and there.

Living in close proximity I still haven't visited as many courses in this country as I would have liked to, but to open up a grande debate among my European friends, and those well-travelled 'non-Euros' who have voyaged and played golf extensively in France, what would be in your top 5?

It could well be they reside in and around Paris, perhaps one down in Biarritz, perhaps one towards south of Calais, or maybe a lone one down in the Cote d'Azur?

Merci

RT,

The November 2005 issue of Golf World should list "Europe's Top 100", I don't have a copy but hopefully someone will tell us the verdict. The 2003 rankings, France's best are :

1) Les Bordes
2) Morfontaine
3) Chantilly
4) Prince de Provence
5) Golf National

The very good "Peugeot Golf Guide" gives :

19/20 for :
Les Bordes
Prince de Provence

18/20 for :
Chantilly
Kempferhof
Médoc
Morfontaine
National
Spérone

17/20 includes Barbaroux, Fontainebleau, Royal Mougins, Saint-Germain & Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche.

For me, Fontainebleau should be up there in the five, possibly relegating National. As for Prince de Provence, hardly anyone has seen it, let alone played there. Is it that good ? Or just highly manicured, I don't know.
Morfontaine is the genuine french masterpiece, and will deservedly always be in the top 3. As for the rest, it's a battle between the old & the new. For example, I much prefer St-Germain to National, but I am a little biased.

Miseur RT,
I would have to say that les classique Morfontaine has about as much interest to me as les classique Catherine Denueve, and you know how I feel about her.

As far as les Modern, well Golf De Médoc would have to be my Sophie Marceau, and you know how I feel about her too.

Someday, I hope to see these beauties for myself.

Well I'm sure you know that NAF and I were very keen on Morfontaine and St Germain.  Our mistake was not to leave enough time for the 3rd 9 at Morfontaine.

St Cloud is pretty good too; big rolling parkland course that really gets going at the 6th.

can't get to heaven with a three chord song

Here's the Golf Digest list (updated in May this year):

1. Golf de Morfontaine, Morfontaine
2. Le Golf National (L'Albatros), Guyancourt
3. Les Bordes, Beaugency
4. G.C. de Barbaroux, Brignoles
5. Golf de Fontainebleau, Fontainebleau
6. Le Touquet G.C. (La Mer), Le Touquet
7. Golf d'Hardelot (Les Dunes), Hardelot
8. Golf de St.-Cloud (Vert), Garches
9. Golf de Chantilly, Chantilly
10. Golf de St.-Germain, St.-Germain-En-Laye
11. Le Prince de Provence, Vidauban
12. Golf de Spérone, Bonafacio, Corsica
13. Golf de Moliets, Moliets
14. G.C. de Lyon (Les Sangliers), Villette d'Anthon
15. G.C. d'Hossegor, Hossegor
16. Golf de Chiberta, Anglet
17. Golf de Nîmes-Campagne, Nîmes
18. Golf de Taulane, La Martre
19. Paris International G.C., Paris
20. Pont Royal G.C., Aix-en-Provence

It is clear that Golf National is not in the top 5 in the country.

One could argue for a place ahead of it for each of Fontainebleau, St Germain, Chantilly and St Cloud.

Sperone looks spectacular.

Unfortunately, I took up golf after leaving France, but I do concur about Catherine and Sophie. And then there's always the up and coming actress Fernande Unetelle. Et quand je pense à Fernande.........

This smells like a potential GCA ROAD TRIP!  Fly into Paree, rent a French MeeneeBoos, hire un "Implement du bois ou metal qui propell un balle du golf sur un piece du bois ou plastic qui est emplache sur le gazon au depart du trou" (that's french for "driver"), buy a few barrqiues of vin ordinaire and a few wheels of smelly cheese and Robert, c'est votre oncle!

Hit as many of the top 20 as we can, maybe fly Kelly Blake Moran over to give us a lecture on the influence of French military tactics on gallic golf designs...........  Sounds like fun to me!

All you'd need to make this voyage parfait: a few Géant  Rongeurs!

Oh, that's right. You're talking about France. Plenty of 'em there!

Never mind.
