photos of Monterey Peninsula CC (Shore)
« on: August 25, 2005, 08:54:04 AM »
There have been several photo threads in the past of the
new Shore course at Monterey Peninsula CC, completely
redesigned by the late Mike Strantz.  Last month, I was
fortunate to play with our esteemed local friend, and here are
my pics (and yes, I know the year on the Official Redanman
Date Stamp is off by a wee bit).

#1 par 5, 507 yards:

#4 par 4, 384 yards:

#5 short par 4 approach, 340 yards:

#6 par 5, 514 yards:

approach from left side:

from closer up (atop the 'rock pile' in the background is the
back tee for the par 3 11th, which is across the road from the rest of the hole at left):

#7 long par 3, 219 yards:

#8 par 4 approach, 443 yards (you can see the cloud layer forming):

#9 long par 3 from back tee, 227 yards (little bit of Spyglass in the background):

from a little closer up:

#11 from back tee, 178 yards (w/view of Cypress):

#12 par 5, 598 yards:

#12 from long approach:

#13 par 4 from back tee, 401 yards:

approach from right side (closest view of Cypress):

#14 par 3, 185 yards:

#16 short par 5 from back tee, 492 yards:

approach:

#17 par 4, 407 yards:

This was one of the more enjoyable courses that I have played recently. The sweep of the fairway contours is as good as any course I have seen. I loved the sweeping panoramas of the course and the way he routed holes to make use of the borrowed scenery behind. Loved the greens and the slopes around the greens. Only complaint I have is the end, I found 17 not as appealing and 18 left me completely flat.

Still an outstanding piece of architecture, with many aspects and ideas that I admire.

TePaul's maintenance meld personified. Love that tinge of brown, you just know the Shore plays "fast and firm".

I went back in the original post and added the yardage from
the back tees of all of the holes shown.

I'm curious as to what the changes were that Strantz made.  Was it just redoing the bunkers and/or greens, or did he rerout it at all? I've heard nothing but great things about the work he did, but I don't know what it was like before....

Mr. Huntley would be the best to respond to that question ... or check the archives ...

Sean,

Its a new course, he changed the routing, the greens, the bunkers, everything!

I played the old course, but the new course looks amazing!  The members at MPCC are very lucky indeed!  They now have 2 high caliber courses to choose from.

Sean - it was almost a complete re-do.  The tree corridors remain from holes 1-4 and the current 16-17 (which were 17-18), but other than that it's all brand new.  Even on those holes the bunkering and greens are completely new - the rest of the course is absolutely different.

What's interesting is that the course was DAMN good before... it's hard to believe it could be that much better.

But it is.

Sean,

Only 6 holes follow old corridors in the same direction as the
original course (1-4, current 17-18), but all others were re-
routed or reversed.

Much of the re-routing of the holes out towards the ocean
were done to maximize the views.

The original version can be seen from above here:

Scott - not to nit-pick, but the old 16, current 17, follows the same tree corridor as well.

As does #4.

They're adjacent to each other, middle-right of the aerial.  Holes are in the same place today.

The testament to Strantz' brilliance remains that this was a great golf course before, and is better now.  That's a tough feat to pull off.  But he did.

Huck,

I had it right in my first draft, then changed it last second for
some reason, confusing myself.  Kinda like reading a putt,
always go with your first instinct.... ;)

No hassles man.  At least re #4, the hole is so damn different with the huge waste bunker on the right, it FEELS totally different even if it does occupy the same space.

GREAT pics, btw!

Tom,

Did you really think the old Shore was a 'great' course?  It certainly had some great views. I only played it once and I thought is was very good, it had some very cool holes, but it was clearly inferior to the Dunes course (which is no shame).  I guess I have a hard time with the throwing around of the word great so much. I feel there are only so many greats or the word loses its meaning.  I know your not one prone to hyperbole.  :)

That pic of Scott's from #11 is almost a dead ringer for the shot in this month's GolfDigest.  The GD version is a bit more painter-ly, due to the incredible light conditions.

BTW, as beautiful as that shot is, I've come to think that #11 could be a better green, since it's nigh impossible to land a shot near a front pin.

The front entry is a rather sharp hump that kicks shots to the back.  You basically can land a high one anywhere on the front of the green and it will run all the way to the back.

Landing it short is very risky too, since the hump might just keep the ball shost and off the green.

From the ~146yd tee, I've seen people keep a high 8-iron near the pin on the right, but even from there, most shots will run off the back.  From the 178yd back tee, I don't think there is a good shot for an amateur player with the pin on the front...

Craig:

I am prone to hyperbole.  I am King Hyperbolus I.  ;)

But that being said, yes I did think the old Shore was a great golf course.  I really think it had the best set of greens on the Peninsula, in terms of contour + condition.  Think for a moment what that statement means....

And I wouldn't have said it was clearly inferior to the Dunes - no way.  I wonder if Mr. Huntley believes that.  Now remember I am a HUGE fan of the Dunes course, and in fact I have stated on here before that even as the Shore is now I don't find it clearly superior to the Dunes - in fact to me it's now neck and neck.  But the Old Shore clearly inferior to the Dunes?  No way.  The old Shore had a quirk and a charm that the Dunes does not - with the holes going in and around the rocks - and couple that with the wonderful greens and well, to me you had a winner.  OK, maybe the Dunes was a LITTLE better overall because it was clearly a better challenge, and man it does have incredible par threes... but clearly better I just can't buy.

So you had to me a great golf course.  Yes, great.

So what do we have there today?

A REALLY great golf course.

So it is written, so it shall be done.

Well of course it will be interesting to read what the true monarch, King Wolf I (Mr. Huntley) says on the subject.  I remain just a way-too-frequent guest.

Scott -

As Huck can attest to (and quite frankly I think he set me up ;) ), I too lightened my wallet on this very hole with this same pin location ...

Well Mr. Benham plays from the proper side
of the ball.  I was referring to the golfer
in your photo, Scott.

He is playing left-handed, isn't he?

I thought the "memory of a lefty on that hole" brought back
the memories, not just the hole itself.  A misunderstanding of modifiers.

Also, considering the lefty is shown on a previous hole....I
hope you can understand my misunderstanding...
