GCA Penn State Golf Outing
« on: July 22, 2005, 03:19:31 PM »
A few months ago I made an inquiry as to any interest in having an outing at the Penn State Golf Courses and then a tailgate at a football game the next day.

I'd like to officially ask for participants. Ideally, the golf outing would be September 2nd, 9th, or 16th and then the tailgate would be the next day before Penn State plays one of its non-conference games. Tickets are available for the game, however, I was unable to work a group deal with the Athletic Department.

We'd be playing the White Course, which as you may have read in my "My Home Course" piece has a majority of it's holes designed by Willie Park. The greens and many of the features still exist in some form, though like many courses from that era, they have become overgrown with trees and the greens and fairways have shrunk significantly.

The point of my efforts with the PSU Golf Courses is to get some attention on the White Course and maybe alert the University to the museum piece of golf architecture it currently runs. While not of the calibre of the Warren Course at Notre Dame (as much as that pains me to say ;D) or the Scarlet Course at OSU (another painful admission ;D) The White Course could be made into a noted University Golf Course.

Cost for the golf would be $45, including a golf cart, range balls, and $5 in gift certificates to the whole group (we'd have prizes for closest to the pin, et al.). Unfortunately, they cannot offer a "walkers' rate" but the option of walking is still open.

I'd ask that if there is an interest in the tailgate for an addition $10 to cover costs of parking and food.

I'd intend for this event to be social in nature and I can garauntee an excellent and fun off-course experience as well. Bar-hopping and fine dining Friday evening are the norm in State College and it's an excellent town for the whole family during the day and night. Accomodations could be tight, but are generally available. If not in State College, then nearby Lewistown (30 min) or Altoona (45 min).

As of now, the date is negotiable such that we can accomodate all who mentioned they were interested. Please post on this thread or PM me if you'd like to attend.

I'm in if I can get a day off...I can also offer to lecture any Penn State women on the merits of "flask architecture"!  ;)

Kyle, thanks for putting this together.

Doug,

Just glad to see you have to get a day off.  :)

Are you asking for another 2 &1 defeat at the hands of me?  What would Mayday say about that?   ;D

Kyle-

You offer me strokes, I'm taking them.  Like Marcellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction: "F**k Pride".  All that matters at the end of the day is if I have my Foot Joy marks on your neck and your money in my pocket.   ;D

I've been meaning to say the same thing to Huckaby re his post about the Sand Hills matches.

Count me in Kyle. I'm a PSU grad and season ticket and should be able to swing any of your dates with a little notice.

In the name of shameless self-promotion...

A bump to the top for all who weren't around last week.
