Practice Areas
« on: May 10, 2005, 12:17:46 AM »
Hello all!  I am looking for a change of residence, and was wondering if anybody knew of any good golf courses/communities that were located at or near the ocean(preferable Atlantic) and had really good practice facilities.  I have only found a few in many hours of searching, and was wondering if anybody could help?

Berkeley Hall, near Hilton Head Island, is probably the best practice facility other than at World Woods. Belfair isn't too bad either....

How are you defining a "good" practice facility?

PGA Village at Port St. Lucie in Florida is very good.

I'll second Anthony's vote for Berkeley Hall.

I'll third Anthony on Berkeley Hall.

Separately, Daufuskie Island (the Bloody Point facility in particular) is pretty good if you like it quiet.

I'll fourth Berkeley Hall. The practice facility is unbelievable.

Here's a link to it for those who haven't seen it:

While you are in the Hilton Head area looking at Berkeley Hall, you might want to give The May River Club at Palmetto Bluffs a look.   The course is fantastic and the practice area is absolutely first class.   It is located in Bluffton just before you go over the Hilton Head bridge.   There are at least two more courses planned if I understand the development plan correctly.  The word is that Doak and Crenshaw are in the running for the next one to be constructed.

After looking over the practice area at Bandon Dunes, I would say its among the best I have seen.  It's also the largest which is maybe the biggest factor in building a quality practice area.  Friars Head, Olympic, Monterey Pensuila CC all have good practice areas and are blessed with huge amounts of land.

Trump International in West Palm Beach also has an excellent practice area
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Now Joel, I love the Olympic Club and cherish every round I have been fortunate enough to play there. However, unless one includes the par 3 course, I am having trouble even thinking of it as a good much less great practice facility. I am with you all the way on Bandon and do feel MPCC has a very good one for an older club.

Olympic is a sleeper because they have the chipping and bunkers down by the domino room.  They also have the new practice green to the right of the 1st hole and then that huge putting green.  The range is very large and hopefully will be rebuilt shortly.  There is already plans to expand the range at Olympic because players are hitting it so far.  The downside is that we are going to have to move the 15th green on the Ocean course which is the best hole on the course.

MPCC is an older course but the range is newly rebuilt, either by Strantz or Rees?
