Golfweek World Top 100
« on: January 11, 2005, 03:50:23 PM »
A liitle bird told me this is going to happen...when it does how much different will the list look than the one at Golf Magazine....When do you see the current Modern list falling off of the face....Friars Head is a lock at 11...is that it..How deep do you see the Classic list going..

This is as it shold be, don't you think? One list is what I mean. After all, the game did not change at the time they divide modern from classic. Agree or disagree?

Sean,

The list does not exist yet...one of the problems is deciding if to have a top 100 Modern World and a top 100 Classic World...I hope they stick with just the one list so we can finnally see some of the big courses do battle.....Is there any doubt that when looking from a world perspective that Friars Head will be above Bandon Dunes...

Sean,

As good as Bandon Dunes may be...do you really see it getting sniff when up against the true links courses in the world.....not me.   Friars Head is a different story....How about Kinloch for that matter....Do you see it falling when on a world stage..

Are you sure its GolfWeek?   Golf Digest is putting together something as well, called PlanetGolf?

Joel,

That's not what my bird told me...but maybe Jonathan is out of the loop on this one..

In the Golf Digest model are they using the same rater corps or putting together a new more specialized group..

I don't know if new panelists are involved but GD sent me a ballot via E-Mail that listed cpurses all over the world.  GD is going to list the best courses in each country.  I don't know when it will come out.

Tommy/all,

The best in each country is not a new thing for Golf Digest.  The last one came out something like a year ago.  The interesting tidbit from this ranking is where they list the number of golf courses in each country.  Here's the most recent list from last year:

Strangely, no-one has emailed me..
Lets be real with this. If the editorial staff of the publication in question are European (ie British) it will be one list and if it is a US based venture it will be another list.
When I was in college this was called post modernist thinking, recognising that different perspectives will reach different conclusions. I believe we are now post post modernist, So I'm not sure if my 2 cents are passe. Probably..

Does it really matter whether this list (if it happens) is different from Golf Magazine's or Golf Digest's?  And if the panel is all European, all North American or mixed?  It's all subjective anyway.  That's what keeps us, who obscess over golf and all things golf, busy and happy.  Let's just sit back and enjoy it.

In the Golf Digest model are they using the same rater corps or putting together a new more specialized group..

They are using the same panelists.  The scoring is a very simple 1 to 10 scale and no US courses are involved.  It is the same thing that Scott posted the link to.

Golf Magazine is sending out the ballots for their Top 100 in the next week or so with the ballots due by the end of April.  We should see the results by the end of the year.

They also treat Ireland and Northern Ireland as "one".  It's probably not good to get the IRA on your bad side.

You will offend one or other section of the community what you call it. Actually, almost nobody will be offended.

It's such a strange place, when the most popular politician is a bone fide lunatic.

However, the Irish golf team is from the whole island, not just the Republic. The GUI, as Sean says, operates for the whole island.
