Golf in Norway
« on: December 19, 2004, 09:18:39 PM »
My family going to Norway next June to visit a foreign exchange student who spent a year with us.  I introduced her to the game by taking her to see Suzann Petterson play her singles match in the Solheim Cup at Interlachen. As she learned the game, we talked about someday playing golf at midnight in Norway.

We do not have an itinerrary, but know we will be visiting Tromso in the North and Oslo.  We probably will also go to Trondheim.  I know nothing of golf courses in Norway and will play two times at the most.  Any suggestions?

I've never been to Norway, but just from my reading , Oslo Golfklubb seems to be the one that comes up the most.

Golfcourse.com has 4 listings for golf courses in Norway:

http://www.golfcourse.com/search/countryq.cfm?cntry=NORWAY

That number surprises me. I would think there has to be more than 4 courses in a country of that size - although I know it gets cold there.

I'd be able to help if you asked about Sweden or Finland, but the online expert for Norge is Brian Phillips.  Keep bumping up this thread until he answers.

Have fun.  Scandinavia is fun in the summer, and the later in June you go (Mid Sommar) the better.  Three weeks can make a difference after a hard winter.

Jason,

E-mail me at brian@niblickgolfdesign.com and I can organise golf for you and co. without problem.  I can get you on Byneset near Trondheim which is a Donald Steel golf course.  They are also constructing the next stage of the course next year as well so you will also get a tour of that if you want.

In Oslo there are many choices that I can organise.  Just e-mail me and let me know what sort of golf you like.  We don't have any links courses.

Tromsų is probably the only large town in Norway that I have not visited yet and is supposed to be the Paris of the North.

You will be able to play midnight golf in Oslo in June no problem and all golf courses are public courses.  There are 153 golf courses in Norway, 39 are 18 hole, 70 9 hole and the rest 6 hole.  There are 118 000 members of the Norwegian Golf Union.

If Suzann P is in the area I will try to organise a meeting with her if you want but I cannot promise anything as she will probably be in the US at the time.

Cheers,

Brian.

Panhandle Bill,
Why bomb Norway? Well, I for one refuse to dine by the light of a Norwiegen moon. I say bomb them for the same reasons why I say bomb Canada too. Take out Mingay and all of his fellow war mongering Canucks who are allowing commies to cross the border into our United States everyday. They have tried to feed us that diet of hockey for years now, and thankful they (the NHL) cease to even exist as we speak! Its all a blight on the American way of life as we know it.

God Bless America! Our America! Not that hell hole to the North which can't decide whether they're English or French.

Now back to Norway....

I hear for a fact that the put a secret ingredient in their vodka that makes you crave it forth-nightly. They also favor fluoridation--a commie plot if there ever was one. If it was me, I would be telling our bombers to strike now before one more ounce of water was touched. Rumor has it that the movie, Song of Norway is loaded with subliminal messages telling us to buy from places like Ikea and Plummer's.

No thank you!

That furniture lasts about 10 seconds with a Fatman sitting on it--IF he can fit into it. Its all nothing more then fancy pressboard which is designed to break apart five minutes after you get it home.

General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Lord, Jack.

General Jack D. Ripper: You know when fluoridation first began?

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I... no, no. I don't, Jack.

General Jack D. Ripper: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. Nineteen forty-six, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Uh, Jack, Jack, listen, tell me, tell me, Jack. When did you first... become... well, develop this theory?

General Jack D. Ripper: Well, I, uh... I... I... first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.

General Jack D. Ripper: Yes, a uh, a profound sense of fatigue... a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I... I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.

General Jack D. Ripper: I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No.

General Jack D. Ripper: But I... I do deny them my essence.

[The President calls the Soviet Premier, Dmitri Kissoff]

President Merkin Muffley: Hello?... Ah... I can't hear too well. Do you suppose you could turn the music down just a little?... Oh-ho, that's much better... yeah... huh... yes... Fine, I can hear you now, Dmitri... Clear and plain and coming through fine... I'm coming through fine, too, eh?... Good, then... well, then, as you say, we're both coming through fine... Good... Well, it's good that you're fine and... and I'm fine... I agree with you, it's great to be fine... a-ha-ha-ha-ha... Now then, Dmitri, you know how we've always talked about the possibility of something going wrong with the Bomb... The BOMB, Dmitri... The HYDROGEN bomb!... Well now, what happened is... ah... one of our base commanders, he had a sort of... well, he went a little funny in the head... you know... just a little... funny. And, ah... he went and did a silly thing... Well, I'll tell you what he did. He ordered his planes... to attack your country... Ah... Well, let me finish, Dmitri... Let me finish, Dmitri... Well listen, how do you think I feel about it?... Can you IMAGINE how I feel about it, Dmitri?... Why do you think I'm calling you? Just to say hello?... OF COURSE I like to speak to you!... OF COURSE I like to say hello!... Not now, but anytime, Dmitri. I'm just calling up to tell you something terrible has happened... It's a FRIENDLY call. Of course it's a friendly call... Listen, if it wasn't friendly... you probably wouldn't have even got it... They will NOT reach their targets for at least another hour... I am... I am positive, Dmitri... Listen, I've been all over this with your ambassador. It is not a trick... Well, I'll tell you. We'd like to give your air staff a complete run-down on the targets, the flight plans, and the defensive systems of the planes... Yes! I mean i-i-i-if we're unable to recall the planes, then... I'd say that, ah... well, ah... we're just gonna have to help you destroy them, Dmitri... I know they're our boys... All right, well listen now. Who should we call?... WHO should we call, Dmitri? The... wha-whe, the People... you, sorry, you faded away there... The People's Central Air Defense Headquarters... Where is that, Dmitri?... In Omsk... Right... Yes... Oh, you'll call them first, will you?... Uh-huh... Listen, do you happen to have the phone number on you, Dmitri?... Whe-ah, what? I see, just ask for Omsk information... Ah-ah-eh-uhm-hm... I'm sorry, too, Dmitri... I'm very sorry... ALL RIGHT, you're sorrier than I am, but I am as sorry as well... I am as sorry as you are, Dmitri! Don't say that you're more sorry than I am, because I'm capable of being just as sorry as you are... So we're both sorry, all right?... All right.......

Tommy, I can understand our friends from the land of 24 hour darkness becoming lost in a sea of the greatest movie of all time. Well greatest next to Caddieshack. However you live in the land of 365 golf and should be getting your z's before another drive to Rustic to take some money off Lynn. Merry Xmas. It is a shame Slim Pickens was not in Caddieshack.

If my faulty memory serves me, Robin Hiseman has a course in the works in Norway. I'll see if I can dig up contact info for Robin.

Is this Hiseman course in Norway the one that ran a competition in Golf World to design a par 5?

Sean,

I think that one is in Germany.  Robin Hiseman is a fully qualified golf course architect that just joined EGD the last month.

I didn't mean to imply that Mr. Hiseman was not an architect.  Just if his Norway course is the one that used a competition winner from Golf World to design a par 5 on the course.

You should be praising the Canucks for giving us hockey!  It's the only manly game left.  Would you have us all swinging at a dimpled ball?

The course with the competition par5 is in Finland.
You can find pictures from http://www.vanajanlinna.fi/portal/golf/suomi/kuvagalleria/

The course will be opened next year.
