Who might design the next Bandon course?
« on: November 20, 2004, 07:31:59 PM »
For those of you that had seen the proposed land, is there any architect that you feel might be the best fit?  Do you think Mr.Keiser would look to the previous architects for another course, or might he go with another virtual "unknown" as he did with Kidd?

I understand David Kidd is currently building a par-3 course at Bandon, but my vote for the next course would be Gil Hanse.  From what I've seen of his work, he'd be an excellent choice for Bandon.

 ???

Some who have dealt with natural settings sucessfully would be strong candidates to build another- Crenshaw and Coore's work at Sand Hills would make them a natural.  Out here in the east, Rick Jacobsen has built some nice courses...

Just because I like variety I would hire someone who has a different style. I say give it to a guy who has the potential to completley screw up or create a masterpiece. I say go against the safe pick.
the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

Keiser should try to get a loose collaboration going of Kidd, Coore & Crenshaw, Doak, Hanse, Kittleman, Whitman, Procter, Axland, The Boys, Renaissance et al. Most of those guys have all worked together at some point anyway. Keiser himself should act the part of the final editor of the course's design as George Crump did at PVGC. Mike Keiser has shown real vision at Bandon so for the final course he should do his own thing and let it all hang out!

Here's another idea for the fourth course. Do you know what Crump planned to do next at PVGC when he finished his course? He was going to build another great golf course right there just for women!

I suggest Jim Engh
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Obviously, the focus will be on finding the best man for the job, a designer experienced in dealing with natural sites, etc....be it any of the guys mentioned above.

However, Matt's post got me thinking.  I wonder if the design commission could be given to someone as a challenge to "raise their design game."  I don't know if this could ever be done without being an thinly-veiled jab at the architect's current design portfolio, or if the architect would overlook that and accept the job anyway, but it is food for thought.

Perhaps someone who is very established in the profession but not currently considered an architect who "gets it."  This architect could design their course on the site provided next to the (soon to be) three courses on site , and the whole world would see how their design style matches or doesn't match the three naturally styled courses.  Maybe they would learn something and it would positively effect their efforts in the future, even if the course was not up to the standards of the others.

I know in reality that this would be walking a fine line in terms of owner/architect relations, as it would take quite an ego on the part of Mr. Keiser to try to "educate" unfavored architects by putting them in this position.  Also, no one wants to chance a course that could be a dud, if you will.

Comments?

Brad,

Mike could educate me, if he wants! ;)

Having read the article about how Mike Keiser wants to recreate Lido, I figure the natural choice would be Brian Silva, with his Raynor theme courses.  I also recall that both Brian and Steve Smyers were rumored to be under consideration for the last project, which I suspect would put one of them in line for the next one.

But, I could be wrong.

Could you remind me of some other, architecturally successful golf courses that were designed by a committee ?

If you like, you can expand the question to any form of art. ;D

Pat,
Though Mike Devries gets alot of credit for Pilgrim's Run in Michigan, rightfully so, it was actually designed by committee.

If someone wanted to recreate LIDO I think I would want the worlds foremost authority on LIDO and the work of CB MacDonald and Seth Raynor to be heavily involved. He happens to be a hell of a good restoration architect too!

If it was designed by a committee, why should Mike Devries get ANY credit ?

Why would he deserve credit, which you stated, when the COMMITTEE designed the golf course ?

Or, is it possible the Mike Devries designed the golf course ?
That he did the routing and hole layouts ?

I would guess Gil Hanse might get a crack at the 4th course.

Also, where on the property is the Par 3 course going in?  I was out there not too long ago and didn't hear anything about this.

I have heard that Mike DeVries is the front-runner for the next job at Bandon.

Is anyone familiar with the actual land that the next course will be located on?  What are it's characteristics?  Is it similar to any of the other three courses?

Just got back from Bandon and walked the seven holes on the new course with Grant Rogers, the Director of Instruction. Based on my pucker factor and those seven holes, Coore/Crenshaw may have the best course there. Having said that I'd go with a swan song for Pete Dye, or Rod Whitman Whoever it is will be trying to hit for the cycle.

The par three course is being built at the practice facility. The range is being extended so that it will be usable from both ends for full shots. After the morning hitting, one side will be closed, and picked. That is where the pat three course is, and it will only be usuable in the afternoon.

Thanks to someone else's link, here is the link to topo maps. Keep clicking on enlarge to get down to 20 foot lineage. http://mapmachine.nationalgeographic.com/mapmachine/viewandcustomize.html?task=getMap&themeId=113&size=l&state=zoomBox&ext=

If the course is built inland from Pacific Dunes, you have a flattish exposed plain on the west, with a N/S primary dune about 50' high. Inland from the dune is another plain. Whiskey Run Creek is at the north end, which could be a good design factor. Your best holes will play off the land near the dune base
