Old Tom knew a thing or four....
« on: January 22, 2004, 01:12:40 PM »
The first thing he knew was to use the natural terrain...

The second - nobody likes a flat lie on a fairway...

The third - existing features make the best natural hazards...

and the fourth - rhythm, balance and harmony are EVERYTHING...

Enjoy...

Washed the people coal-black from the hole in the ground.

If this is Mach(rihanish), didn't the great Doctor MacKenzie put this course on his resume?  Was he spoofing us, or is it just that Auld Tom is a helluva a lot better archie than most of us on this site give him credit for?

If indeed the good - nay, great! - Doctor, cast any hand over this hallowed turf, then he clearly knew his onions. That is - LEAVE WELL ALONE!
I can envision him walking around Mach thinking, I'll do bugger all here, fleece them for a few pounds and nip off to America where I can try the same..... ;)

FBD.

PS a quick check of Malcolm Campbell's 'Scottish Golf Book' mentions J.H.Taylor doing some re-modelling in 1914 and then Sir Guy Campbell later on...

FBD,
Last summer you mentioned that you would be there on a certain day. On that day, I too was there. I had failed to contact you beforehand, but I decided to try and find you anyway. As I only knew your GCA name, I resorted to calling it out occasionally in the hopes that you might be nearby.
Thus it was that throughout the links that day could often be heard the call,
  "Fat Baldy Drummer...".

I even put a sign up, telling you that a free drink awaited you at the bar if you would identify yourself to Ian.

Darn it Neil,
Mike S mentioned this late last year, prior to our florida meeting. I'm sure I could hear my name whistling down the wind!!!

Sorry I missed you, but much more importantly, sorry I missed the free drink. We're thinking of returning to Mach this May for the Mach Festival. I bet Ian still has my beer 'behind the bar'. Cheers!

So that's Machrihanish! Well, I'll be "Go to Hell"! That looks to me like a description of Behrian naturalism!

Rich, I don't know if MacK put Machrihanish on his resume but he did write about it in Spirit of St Andrews - about how he used to go there in the old days and loved it because it was so natural. But every subsequent visit the course got worse because natural hazards had been destroyed, undulations shaved off for the sake of 'fairness' etc.
He doesn't mention any names but I wonder if he was settling old scores with JH Taylor. He also criticises Gleneagles (James Braid's pride) for lack of strategy in the book. Does anyone know if Taylor and Braid were the pros  who mocked the greens at Sitwell Park in the opening exhibition there?
