most beautiful golf book
« on: January 14, 2004, 10:42:31 AM »
I just received my copy of EMERALD GEMS:THE LINKS OF IRELAND.  The pictures are stunning.  It makes me want to grab my clubs and just keep circling Ireland.  With Linda Hartaugh's HALLOWED GROUND, which features her paintings, EMERALD GEMS might be the most spectacular book that features golf courses.  Even the most skeptical people about golf would want at least walk on these special places.

As far as black-and-white photography, I think Geoff Shackelford's book "Alister MacKenzie's Cypress Point Club" is outstanding.

The prize for "most beautiful golf book" must go to either Larry Lambrecht's Emerald Gems or Paul Daley/Dave Scaletti's "The Sandbelt". I still have trouble sorting out which I like better, but they are clearly head and shoulders above the rest.

Though quite different, I would also nominate Geoff Shackelford's book on Cypress Point. I've given copies to maybe twenty people as gifts and everyone loves it.

Tim,

Fully agree with you on the CPC and Sandbelt books.  I am looking forward to getting "Emerald Gems...", but more so, on actually setting my foot on that hallowed soil.

BTW, why don't I have any friends like you?  I've read Shaq's book several times and never tire of it.

I agree Geof's book has to be the best book about one golf course.  The cover with MacKenzie looking out toward 16 is worth the price alone.  Another one course book is PINE VALLEY;A CHRONICAL.  The book about Chicago golf Club ain't bad either.

We have discussed Larry's book on here several times and it is a keeper and a must buy for the coffee table book set.

color: sandbelt by daley and scaletti
b&w: CPC by shackleford

if you need perspective, look at the photography in Nicklaus by Design (much of it is horrible quality, making me think-what was he thinking about?)

The Limited Edition of The Spirit of St Andrews is a beautiful book - a combination of great information and fantastic pictures.
I think they printed 1500 and they are well worth the money if they are still available.

All of Paul Daley's books are good value , and full of great golf photos . There is a recent book by a guy called Clayton that is a good read as well!

Michael Fay's book on Donald Ross' architecture "Golf as it was Meant to be" is very nice. In addition, Tom Fazio's "Golf Course Designs" is full of beautiful photography. Like his architecture or not, the book is visually stimulating.
