Local Paper Tidbits...02/20
« on: February 20, 2025, 01:19:02 PM »
Some sales and tidbits you may have missed over the past week if you don't read local news (in order from largest to least likelihood of happening):

Bristol Oaks (Kenosha, WI): Sold to the owners of Muskego Lakes, so seems like it will remain open if nothing else. Rumors of the creation of a Lawrence Packard Golf Trail are false and exist entirely within this joke. https://kenoshanews.com/news/local/business/bristol-oaks-wisconsin-golf-course-sold/article_16235aec-e968-11ef-9cac-47b63008f3a6.html
Bethany (Bethany, MO): The municipality’s parks department has taken over operations of the otherwise-public local course. https://www.bethanyclipper.com/headlines/bethany-parks-department-takes-over-golf-course/
Wyckoff (Holyoke, MA): A buyer has purchased the Donald Ross course with intention to maintain it as a private country club. Club amenity improvement expected but no course updates to expect. https://www.gazettenet.com/Wyckoff-Country-Club-acquired-for-2-8-million-59485437
Scott Schreiner Municipal (Kerrville, TX): The city approved a further $111k for the already approved $4 million renovation plans to occur at the near century-old muni. https://dailytimes.com/news/council-approves-111k-change-for-golf-course-updates/article_db0be866-e976-11ef-8d91-63940ad2d0b3.html
Slievenamon (Tipperary, Ireland): Inland club in southeast Ireland will close, citing both poor business and dues owed to cheap distance memberships via Golf Ireland. In other words…poor business. https://www.bunkered.co.uk/golf-news/golf-course-closes-after-dispute-with-governing-body/
Bear’s Best (Las Vegas): The recently sold Bear’s Best will remain a golf course…albeit a private one. I’ve heard rumors that new ownership plans on spending a significant amount to adapt the course…considering co-owner Andrew Pascal was formerly COO of Wynn, you can imagine. Have since heard from a smoking man that Jackson-Kahn is handling the work. https://www.reviewjournal.com/business/summerlin-golf-course-to-become-private-club-after-sale-3306536/
Woodhaven (Fort Worth): City council approved the rezoning of the former club for mixed-use, which will allow for an 18-hole par three course. Kemper Sports is in discussions to handle this portion of the project. Woodhaven Golf Course redevelopment plan earns go-ahead from Fort Worth leaders | Fort Worth Report
Feddinch Mains (St. Andrews): You likely heard but the long-delayed Feddinch Mains project finally received approval, despite objections to its private-private nature in the St. Andrews atmosphere. D.J. Russell of RAW Design will pick up where Tom Weiskopf left off(?) https://www.the-messenger.com/dawson_springs_progress/news/article_2254a3d0-c3f1-5673-8a35-ce7525de1d34.html
Pennyrile (Dawson Springs, KY): After suggestions that the state park holding might close in the near future, signs suggest that the course will continue…for now. https://www.the-messenger.com/dawson_springs_progress/news/article_2254a3d0-c3f1-5673-8a35-ce7525de1d34.html
Gene Torres Golf Course (Las Vegas, NM): NM Highlands University is looking to spruce up its course by way of adding residential and retail across the property. Better that than let Jeff Brauer’s recent-ish work go to waste. NMHU presents plan to overhaul golf course | Local News | lasvegasoptic.com
Abbey Hotel (Birmingham, UK): A developer won over aggressive outcry against a plan that would park at least a few homes on a portion of the Abbey Hotel golf course, an ‘80s Donald Steel design. The Economist tells me a lot about greenbelt conservatism so I won’t comment. https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/realestate/developer-wins-appeal-over-golf-course-homes-plan/ar-AA1zhRWz?ocid=finance-verthp-feeds
Orlando Mystery Project: The owner of the Long & Scott Farms, north of Orlando, told local news that he’s planning on selling to a developer who plans a 266 acres of residences and 289 acres of golf. https://www.wesh.com/article/farmer-sell-700-acres-lake-county-golf-course-oriented-development/63833324

I was contacted about the Bear’s Best job and passed on it, but can confirm there is plenty of $ behind a complete transformation

The Wyckoff thing seems to mention respect for the Ross pedigree, but will be interesting to see play out.

Same question with Hillcrest…played that years ago and it had great bones….not sure if it needs significant reimagining, so let’s hope it keeps its Ross ethos. Count me as a LinksDao skeptic, but it seems like they have earned great membership numbers, so I guess I’m all wet.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....
