Upvote/Downvote System Now Available
« on: January 14, 2025, 01:53:14 PM »
Hello all,

I mistakenly said the upvote/downvote system was available in the Seminole thread when it wasn't, so I've corrected this mistake and it should be a function now for everyone logged in. I had a surprising amount of interest in this feature, so it's now viewable for everyone! This is what it should look like:

We're going to test this out and see how it goes—ideally, this is a way to celebrate great posts (like the Seminole thread) and hopefully not used for confirmation bias/groupthink or to target users, so we will see! At the end of February, I'll circle back and see what everyone's opinion is and if it should stay.

Please feel free to direct any suggestions my way, there is going to be a formatting guide coming to the forum in the near future to make it easier for everyone to post images/format posts.

Thanks, all, and happy voting!

Terrific.
Remember too that the Send this topic button hasn't worked.  Appreciate your cleaning up these somewhat minor blemishes.

funsies Andrew....
How many uplikes can I give you and who would give you a down like?!
The function I used to find valuable was seeing a poster's past posts - it helped me put an individual's arguments in context.
And I could read all of Doak's posts more easily. :)
keep up the great work
thank you!

Andrew,

Am I liking the post or the poster? I see a post I like and agree with, so I give that post a like... but it seems I am just liking the poster?

Nothing personal but I've just given your post a down vote. Not because of you but I'm just against the idea. On the very odd occasion I've been guilty of doing a +1 but generally I try to explain why I think something a good or bad idea. That generates discussion and often leads to interesting conversations that are often at a tangent to what the thread was about. I'd rather have an exchange of ideas than some popularity contest.

By the way, where do I see my vote ? And am I now going to be chucked off the DG for going against groupthink ? ;)

It would benefit the site to attend to more pressing matters like fixing online contributions whereby the PayPal donation page still doesn’t accept a payment. I realize that we can send a paper check but can’t imagine that this is the preferred or easiest method to donate to GCA. A thread that was started at the beginning of December to address the issue is currently languishing with no remedy to date. Finally missing the opportunity to allow participants to give online in December was a misstep for GCA.

This is my issue with the karma. I would think it was useful to see if people agree with the post, but there doesn't seem to be any indication of likes or otherwise on a given post. Just karma for the poster.

Creating separate classes of posters, the negs and the pos’s, does not promote frank discussion. Harks back to the days when attending GCA outings there were separate lines at the counter for raters and civilians.

Why can’t we all be equal as golfers who love the game?

It felt weird upvoting your post in light of your point. LOL

It also does not indicate who liked or disliked a particular post. I also give JK’s post a thumb’s up.

Can we switch off the voting system individually? Just opt out of the childish popularity contest?

I have been having fun trying to plus vote the Emperor as many times as possible (at least as often as I can remember). Once you do it a few times, it makes you wait 24 hours before doing it again.

Some of y'all seem to think Andrew and Ran are hand-coding the features on this forum.

They're using third-party software. It has certain features within it that can be enabled or disabled, some of which inevitably require additional configuration to deploy.

I don't use a lot of emojis. I'm not going to ask Andrew to remove them from my toolbar. I'm just... not going to use them.

And while you can't turn off your own Karma rating, you don't have to care about it. Alternatively, you can even treat it as a race-to-the-bottom if that's your thing.

There has been consistent, clear, obvious progress with the functionality of the forum and the site at-large over the last several months. I appreciate it, even when it means enabling a feature that doesn't really serve an obvious purpose.

As a PSA - the Ignore List now works again. It's a more powerful tool in your ability to enjoy the site than Karma voting. If you find yourself wondering if you can downvote someone multiple times, consider popping into your profile and reducing some noise. Mine is very short, and very impactful.

Some of y'all have never been called out in bold green font and it really shows.

Spot on, Jason, the Ignore function is a wonderful thing.  I have very few posters on my list (three, as of this morning) but missing their content does enhance my enjoyment of the site......

Niall,

Based on my experience elsewhere on the Internet, I agree with your perspective. I’d prefer CGA be a discussion group where people explain their perspective on issues rather than hand out likes.
