Chip and putt/ aka short courses

 8) ???


Ok guys got a project for you all if you choose to accept. I'm working on a job for a luxury hotel that needs a golf amenity to make it really special. We have the water sports covered and even the boating and fishing portion seems to be falling into place. Do to political and zoning we will be able to use golf as a portion of our open space requirements and have anywhere from 10 -45 acres depending on the wetlands mapping. 


Have seen a bunch including the more famous ones such as "the Cradle"  or Park in West Palm et al  even if just digitally . Any special ones out there that may fly under the radar that anyone really likes ?

Love the first one , thanks . We also intend to do a small building with heated bays and simulators that have so me views. Obviously a golf specific fitness concept tied in also.  Should be a hoot !

The newish 9-hole short course called ‘The Furrows’ at Kingston Heath in Melbourne is outstanding. Mega fun.

One of the most entertaining par three courses I've played (w/Bausch) is Beaver Bend in Hummelstown, PA.


The original architect, one Harvey Skinner (1961) evidently had a wonderful sense of humor and he used it to fashion an 18 hole chip and putt course that has a number of unique greens and interesting greensite placements on rolling terrain..  Joe's photo album can be found here.

Aren't chip and putt different from par 3 courses?  I think of pitch and putt as having relatively short holes, less than 60-70 yards.


A par 3 course or short course could have typical length par 3s that you would see on a "championship" course. 


So the two terms are not synonymous.


For example the Nest at Cabot Links, which was mentioned by someone else, has 10 holes that range from 95 yards to 230 yards.

Since the client is a high end resort (which I take it to mean the golf facilty is for guests only - no public play) and you have a small footprint to work with; perhaps at least kick around the idea of what one might consider on an old estate course - a routing with many multiple tees and playing corridors with just a few greens which would accept a short played from ifferent directions.


In the past I've seen som promo/routing renderings done by Augie Piza which might be a place for some inspiration - the treehouse here on GCA has many others would can opine as well.

Check out the 18 hole par 3 course at North Foreland. Great design. Beginners and folks can have fun, but still tests good players.

I don't know, Bernie.   Please enlighten me on the Golf Farm as it was designed by Garrett Renn in 1961 and I'm very interested in his work.
