Westwood CC (NLE) circa 1926 by Ross in Richmond Virginia.   The course was built, was very popular, and another 9 holes designed by Flynn soon followed the Ross 18.  The Flynn 9 holes was constructed to the south of Ross 18.

The 27 hole golf course was shuttered circa 1935 and the area of the golf course was later redeveloped as residential while the clubhouse survived.  The clubhouse later became a supper club, which was transformed in the mid 60s into the thriving social and tennis club of today known as the Westwood Club.

Riverside Municipal Golf Course, Janesville, WI

Partial plan from 1942 of the expansion to 18 holes by Robert Bruce Harris.

https://archive.lib.msu.edu/tic/golfd/article/1942feb30.pdf

Can't post the image because it is a PDF.

The routing is interesting because it actually ended up being the current one used today, but with the nines flipped. There have been at least two other hole sequences used during my lifetime which were very different from this one, but the one that has been in the place since the mid 1980s actually resembles this one the most.

Flynn’s Manufacturers and Rolling Green in Philadelphia are not on the list. RG’s website displays a section of a routing.

Joe, I looked up Bowring Park. Though “now under construction” in 1923, an 18-hole course did not open there until 1934, according to the course’s website. Nine holes there in 1913 are claimed as England’s first municipal golf course!

Getting ready for a Maine visit next year doing mostly cool old nine-hole courses along the coast.   Here's one on an island, Great Chebeague GC designed by George Spalding and Betrand R.T. Collins, later expanded to nine with a free assist from Wayne Stiles.

I'm posting these images and text for GCAer Greg Hohman. All images are clickable to a larger size.

Golfclub Schloss Georghausen e. V., located near Cologne in Lindlar, Germany.

Six holes inaugurated on Oct 20, 1963. Nine holes in June 1965. Eighteen in 1977. In 1987, GCA Karl F. Grohs did a “remodel,” the word used in The Architects of Golf, where remodeling “runs the gamut from minor revisions to total creation of a new layout.”

1st image: July 25, 1962 drawing by Bernhard von Limburger (1901-1981). Schloss Georghausen does not seem to be attributed to him.

Re “Limmy”: A website limburger-courses.com is attractive, but it is in German and short on the detail the DG expects. If you are curious about something, ask me to translate.

2nd image: nine holes, no attribution.

3rd image: 18 holes, plan and drawing of Club President Kurt Braunschweig.

If the club replies to my email, I will ask questions.
