If the strength of a 9 is the inexorable building up of pressure towards a crescendo then:

What the hell is goin on round here? It took six posts to mention TOC back 9.

My thought exactly.

Perhaps it's just implied/understood?

I'd put the front nine up there too. It's probably top 10 of the 'nines, if not top 5. Or maybe I just really love The Old...

The front nine at Royal Melbourne is pretty good. Maybe better than the back 9:)

Back nine at Harlech (‘superlative’, Jim Finegan)
Back nine at TOC
Front nine at Macrihanish

All these nines are at the seaside. Can’t think of any UK inland ‘nines’ on 18-hole courses that work in quite the same way?

Worse, the front 9 got mentioned before the back 9
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I think I'd very happily play the front nine holes at Silloth for the rest of my days.

Niall
Solid shout.  Though it's just a little let down by the new 5th.
