Phoenix rising golf courses
« on: October 02, 2024, 01:13:10 PM »
Great stories of golf courses. Wellman in SC is one of them. It closed in 2010 and reopened this year as a municipal course. After the course closed, an ex-employee maintained it as well as he could.

Another genuine Phoenix tale is that of Woodlake Country Club in Vass, NC about 20 minutes north of Pinehurst.
Closed about six years ago or so and let go fallow due to issues with the lake damn, Kris Spence was hired by the new owners to resurrect and improve the course.  Apparently, there were weedy trees and brush growing in the greens.  It was originally designed by Ellis Maples who worked with Donald Ross

In the spring I walked the course, then got a round in the next day and I think it is a real gem with interesting greens and a diversity of terrain and styles of holes.
While not in as sandy soil as the Pinehurst area it is really worth playing with some excellent holes and features.   I am almost hesitant to post about it for fear it will get ruined by too much attention.
