Quail Hollow / NC Sports Betting
« on: January 11, 2024, 08:27:02 AM »
North Carolina is looking to introduce sports betting as part of its lottery system.

The state will be allowing the usual suspects (FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, etc...) to set up shop with some portion of the proceeds to go to the state lottery.

Here's where it gets interesting, some NC lawmaker slipped in a clause that requires "those betting companies to form ties with pro sports operations based here."

Here are the affiliations of the betting businesses and the sports groups:

Bet365: Charlotte Hornets

BetMGM: Charlotte Motor Speedway

DraftKings: NASCAR

Fanatics: Carolina Hurricanes

FanDuel: PGA Tour

ESPN BET: Quail Hollow Club (annual host of Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament).

Member-owned, Quail Hollow, which may continue hosting a PGA event, but lost title sponsor Wells Fargo, may receive significant royalties from the betting operations. (Yes, do an internet search, shows up as member-owned best I can find).

What could come from this?

If you're in Charlotte and haven't yet joined, now's the time? Your membership may become a whole lot cheaper.

Or more prestigious depending on what the club does with the proceeds?

Chip,

Good morning, I am in Belmont, right outside the city.

I didn't know a) that NC was considering legalized betting or that b) Quail Hollow would benefit so much from the royalties.  Thank you for the information on this. I am not much of a gambler, but I am somewhat libertarian when it comes to letting people do what they want so long as they are not hurting anyone.

As for joining Quail - there is a good club two miles from me (Cramer Mountain) for which I can't justify the cost , so I guess QH will have to just go on the list for either an invite or happy to walk the course during the tournament.

Where do you like to play in the area? There are some good daily fee options.

Thanks for the information, Rob Kimball

Good to hear from you, Robert
I'm in Cary (between Raleigh and Durham) about 3 hours from you.
Strangely, I haven't had the occasion to play golf over in your parts.

By way of background, I now live adjacent to Seven Eagles, the gated part of the Quail Hollow Club subdivision.  I could easily walk to the course if I could jump a wall and cut through a couple of yards.  To get in the "legal" entrance, I'd have to go about 3/4 mile.  That having been said, I question the assertion that Quail is member-owned.  I know it's organized as a business corporation, following Augusta National's model.  I had always assumed that Johnny Harris (maybe with some family members) owned the course.  I do know some members personally, so next time I see one of them I'll ask.  It was started by Harris's father as a club home for new comers to Charlotte who couldn't get into the older, established clubs.

I have never played the course, but walked it many times during the tournaments there and been to social events in the clubhouse.  I would not want to play it day in and day out as "my club."  The atmosphere as best I can tell is very corporate.  I just found out that one of the members of my course, who is running for our board, joined from Quail three years ago (though I don't know if he quit Quail, too).  Here's a quote from his candidate write up (for what it may be worth): "Having had the good fortune of long-term membership at Quail Hollow and Yeamans Hall, I joined [our club] three years ago. I immediately fell in love with the culture of the club, the group play, the clear primacy of golf above all else, and the camaraderie of so many different but overlapping circles of friends." Personally, Quail would do nothing for me.  Also, I have an aversion to sports gambling, mostly because I think it detracts from the nature of sports and has "fix" potential.

Sports gambling is a legal way for state jurisdictions to raise additional funds for expenditures without raising property or state income taxes on its residents - if you choose not to gamble you pay nothing more tomorrow to the state than you do today.  If you use the service the state gets a vig. or percentage of the sales a s a "sin tax" much like taxing liquor or tobacco.

New Jersey broke the stranglehold on sports betting by suing the Feds and winning (they didn't have to, NJ had gotten included into federal legislation the right to have sports betting if implemented by a certain date - our state legislature was far too inept to act and get the legislation passed at the state level and this loophole expired).

Is legalized betting good or bad ? There are several universities studying the impacts and will publish data on their findings on impact to the community.  Does legal wagering raise funds for the general coffers - yep.  Does it reduce illegal gambling - lets hope the data collected can shed some light on it.

Each state makes their own choices on gambling, lottery etc.

I have a FanDuel account. I love to handicap football - college or pro and will wager a few quid on golf. Basketball - nope - too many players shave points

I have a friend who also lives walking distance to QH (as the crow flies) but the actual trip to the gate is quite long.  As an aside his son participates in the junior golf program there and has played the course many times but my friend has not which is a thorn in his side!

Which course were you referencing about the guy trying to get on your board?  It sounds from the comments that it has a great vibe and focus on the golf part.  I have played most of the clubs around Charlotte but there are a couple I have not.  I would be curious which one has this proper golf centric focus?

Legalized gambling is a touchy subject. Every time I have been in a casino and it's been a long time, half the people I see gambling look to me like they can't afford to be doing it.

Carolina Golf Club, which is near the airport in west Charlotte.  Golf course (Ross 1929/Spence 2008) and small swimming pool, though a new clubhouse is under consideration and no telling if the members will approve it -- I hear different things -- or whether the vibe will change if a new clubhouse is built.  I did ask about the membership deal at Quail and the member told me he was uncomfortable discussing it with outsiders. Fair enough. Omerta.  So be it.  I'll try some others.
