Number and % types of GB&I courses
« on: July 23, 2022, 03:29:35 AM »
This is not meant as a ‘which is - which isn’t - debate, rather it’s a request for some information.

I’m trying to determine some stats for the number of 18-hole courses in GB&I by types/category?…… ie links, parkland, heathland, upland/moorland/downland?

The same numbers for 9-holers (by type/category) and par-3 courses would be interesting too.

Thanks in advance.

I don’t know if there is an official stat on this, but the book True Links put the worldwide count of links courses at 300 and change, so that would be 7-10% of all the courses in GB & I.

I'm not sure where you'd get information for the rest of GB&I but Robert Prices book should largely answer your questions for Scottish courses. I have an extra copy if you don't have it.

Adrian Stiff has a spreadsheet with all GB (&I?) courses and designers.
I'm sure it will identify 9 holers and possibly more of what you seek.
Shoot him a line and I'm sure he'll share it.

Good luck.
Let's make GCA grate again!

Every 2 years the R&A publishes a study regarding the number of courses around the world.  Google "R&A Golf Around the World 2021" for the latest edition...it gives the number of facilities, number of courses, and number of golf holes by country (I presume that Winged Foot would be considered a single facility with 2 courses containing 36 holes...and that Bandon Dunes would be considered one facility with 6 courses (Bandon Dunes, Bandon Trails, Pacific Dunes, Old Mac, Sheep Ranch, and Bandon Preserve) with 103 holes (5x18 plus 13 holes on Preserve).  But there is very little detail...and I called the R&A a few years ago to see if I could get a copy of their data base and was politely told NO.

I'd think the AA Golf Course Guide would be the easiest way to collate this information. I'm pretty sure they list the category/type of course for every course.

(I think they stopped printing this early 2010s, but it will give you a good approximation.)
