"Medinah eyes a debut: After a striking redesign by Australian firm OCM (Geoff Ogilvy, Mike Cocking, and Ashley Mead), Course 3 at Medinah Country Club near Chicago will reopen later this week. The reworked course will host the 2026 Presidents Cup, and we wouldn’t be shocked to see it book additional high-profile tournaments in the near future."

It’s a transformational redo. It’s more fun for the members and their guests but still challenging enough for the pros. I’m confident that it will be well received.

Nice of the Fried Egg to play OCM's national anthem over the vision.

Mike Cocking was on Derek Duncan's podcast recently -- I listened to the first 30 minutes and it was mainly DD complaining about US golf rather than discussing architecture but he teased a discussion of Medinah so hope to get back to it. Mike was calling in from Tepetonka in Minnesota which I saw a fist pic of online this weekend.

Huge fan of their work at Yangtze Dunes in China.

There are few other videos that came out during the course of the project if interested (thank you for you team's work @Andy Johnson)

https://vimeo.com/990161272 - The Fence Holes

https://vimeo.com/982644179 - Course Summary

https://vimeo.com/867986648 - Building Bunkers

https://vimeo.com/904147941 - The Short Course (5 holes)

https://vimeo.com/863691538 - Hole 18

https://vimeo.com/856857612 - Hole 1

Besides adding 40.3 miles of drainage - the first macro drainage project we ever undertook (which is a bit wild considering all the changes over the years) - all greens, fairways, surrounds, lakes, drainage basins, etc. were changed and/or improved.

We opened for member play on July 13th (members only in 2024), 14 months after the first bulldozer hit the property.

OCM was awesome to work with and given the long-distance from their home base, one of O, C or M was on site most every day.  The member response has been fantastic - and I know they can't wait to share it with their friends in the years ahead.

Was fortunate to get to play Medinah #3 a couple days ago.  Was unfortunate that it was by far the hottest day of the year in Chicago, but most of us survived.

I never had the pleasure of playing the most recent version, but this new version is extremely fun, and compared to how the old version came across on television, I think it's going to be much more interesting and enjoyable for the members.  A great deal of variety.  I think I hit 9 greens and did so with 7 different clubs, and that was from the 6,500 yard tees.  Green surrounds provide a lot of options for recovery, and I think I ended up putting on those shots more often than not.  The fence holes, especially 5 and 6, were great both visually and strategically.  We had a left pin on 6 (we had a lot of really tough pins), and with that flag it's not a hazard you can easily ignore.  If you play away from it off the tee, you're going to deal with it on the approach.

OCM were on-site for a Q&A and discussion post round, and couldn't have been nicer or more accomodating, and that goes for the staff as well.  Ryan and the rest of the membership should be very pleased with the finished work.  The old version didn't look like a course I'd want to play every day.  I think this looks like a major improvement.  It stands to be seen whether it will test the best in stroke play, but the old version had already shown that it no longer could, and I think this place will be super fun for match play.

I remember someone (maybe an assistant pro?) said they wanted it to be as far removed from the 2012 Ryder Cup course as they could make it. Seems like mission accomplished.

Per Andy at Fried Egg the President's cup is going to reroute the course with 5 as #1 and 4 as #18 to maximize corporate hospitality on the closing holes. Which is just crazy as 16-18 is an amazing match play finish. But to top it off, apparently the PGA tour complained there wasn't a practice green at 5 tee for their re-route...

The members that we played with said that one of the reasons they were doing it was so that every match would get to 16-18. They are great holes, but they only make for a great match play finish if the matches actually get there.
