Adam,

Thanks.  Hey, I aced my first job interview since 1977, what can I say. I am excited about the new position. Seriously, After 44 years in the profession, I began to think I could be most useful in years 45-50 working for the profession and its future.

Of course, as my job title suggests, I will be reaching out soon!

Congrats Jeff!  I should have guessed.  I can't think of a stronger supporter of your professional organization.  Believing in your product as you do will make your new job a lot easier.

You left quite a legacy here in Texas.  Thanks!

Best of luck.

That situation is fluid.  But, I am leaning toward not wearing it anymore since I will not be an active gca.

I feel like we lost a stud and gained an administrator. I hope you get back in the dirt soon as I have always valued your work.

Congratulations Jeff.  I have played 19 of your courses and enjoyed every one of them.  That's the most I've played for any single GCA.
Lots of success on your new adventure.

Mike,

MY and I talk regularly, I see no reason that would stop.  And of course, I will be calling you as well.

Doug,

I have to admit, I have never thought in terms of a golfer playing that many of my courses, nor have I heard of anyone playing 19 of mine.  I haven't researched it, but I'll say you are the Brauer Trail champ.....sadly, there is no trophy or cash prize.

Anthony,

At first, I will contact and listen to ASGCA constituencies, including members, prospective members, non-members, (both in the US and abroad) industry partners and associations, and media/public/golf nerds, etc. in about that order.  I hope to take their ideas and use them to improve ASGCA if I can, focusing on new initiatives, better education and meetings, and so forth.  it is quite possible that the position will take unintended directions.

First you figured out the Golf House Road land swap, likely averting World War III and now you are promoted.

Coincidence?  I think not!   ;D

Jeff:

One of the very few folks holding an LA degree (TD likely also is one) who is financially savvy enough to turn $100's into $1,000's & not vice versa.

Two things I always remind any budding landscape architect (someone older and wiser than me passed these along):

1. How do you get to have a million dollars by practicing landscpae architecture?  By starting with $2 million !!

2. If you gave most LA's  a $900,000 head start, they could not even figure out how to become a millionaire.

Best of luck in the new venture.  Did you have to dust off the old resume and practice your interview skills?

Bruce,

Resume no, interview skills yes.  They had sent out a list of potential responsibilities, and I went in with a detailed list of how those might be accomplished, which served as the basis for the interview.  Not unlike taking a client a free preliminary routing......

It was my first job interview since 1977, and even on that one, I was pretty sure I had the job before going into Killian and Nugent.  So, my first real job interview since 1976 with the Theodore Brickman Landscape Company for a summer position.

The LA biz is funny, just not the funny that you laugh at......The Dallas Morning News would occasionally do a survey of the biggest landscape architecture firms, prior to 2000. I haven't seen one lately.  No one asked me, but based on revenues, I definitely should have been on the list.  What was even funnier was my revenues were over a million with 2-5 employees.  Some of those firms listed $1 Mil in revenue and said they had 20 employees.  Not sure how they made it work with a revenue of just $50K per employee. I suspected they fudged their revenue and employee numbers so they would look like a big firm, but didn't think how they would look when put together.

In any event, despite 44 good years as a gca, I think it will be good for me to change gears.  Of course, there is a good joke in there....as in "I had 33 good years as a gca.....and was in the biz for 44."

Jeff:

The guys who had 20 on the payroll may have been doing landscape maintenance, not design and construction.  Grass cutting is price sensitive and folks change providers for a $5 savings.......plus perhaps not all those guys on that payroll were on the books employees............been known to happen with cash-centric businesses who need bodies for semi-skilled/unskilled labor.

Bruce,

I am going from memory, but the survey was of the office type firms, like Johnson, Johnson, and Roy who didn't have any construction work.  But, it's just a memory, worth not a lot.

Thanks Jeff for putting yourself out there, it is the man in the arena we all should respect and you certainly are changing gears for the betterment of others and the profession. In general, professional societies are much more positive than negative, they are imperfect but add much more or they won't exist in the future. GCA isn't a large profession and like the Latin language not many know it, but appreciate and respect those who do.

Look forward to certain enhancements you are going to be part of.

ASGCA’s leadership is enthused. Jeff’s role is to help guide change, and look for ways we can do better to promote the art. A lot of what he’s communicated here is a good example of this. BTW, we’ve all approved his tartan jacket to be worn, but that’s his choice.
