Quixote Club fka Sunset Country Club

Good to see that despite the COVID-19 outbreak and its virtual shutting down of the golf industry, there are new construction projects in the works. One of which is the transformation of the Sunset Country Club in Sumter, SC to the Quixote Club.

What Golf Course Industry describes as a reconstruction and restoration appears more like a complete makeover to me - especially with the entire back nine being redone.

From the photos I was able to come across of the old course on the internet, it didn't appear to be that bad of a track. Granted, it was flat, but it had some interesting looking holes and green complexes. From the panoramic photo of the course on the new clubs website, it appears they've done a lot of tree clearing in addition to having redone many of the greens and brought a lot more water into play.

The redesign is a collaboration between Spence Golf and Nicklaus Design. The design plan for the course looks pretty interesting, with a lot of carries over waste areas and rough in addition to water. Has anyone here played the old Sunset course and have any thoughts on the redesign?

I'm told that nags and burros will roam the grounds. A bid has been made to purchase the windmill at NGLA. A local rule, allowing a 15th club in the bag, has been proposed, provided that it takes the shape of a lance. There will be two club championship brackets only, the Dulcinea and the Aldonza.

Carry on, you dreamers. Not all are impossible.

As I live only 3 hours away, I have followed the project on Kris Spence's Twitter.
Looks pretty cool to me.

I played Sunset CC (albeit 14 years ago) so my memory is not that vivid.

I recall it being a decent course, I sought it out after reading it was originally a Donald Ross design.  Not a bad golf course just fairly nondescript.

I am looking forward to seeing the new course, club, and vision.

My old buddy and Buckeye classmate, David Savic appears to be involved on behalf of Mr. Nicklaus.  David is extraordinarily creative and artistic.   I suspect that his contributions will add a flair to the end product that will make more of the project than might otherwise not exist without his involvement.  Hope you all are well.

Great to hear you know someone personally involved with this project. I look forward to seeing photos of the finished product and hopefully one day playing the course.
