Dilige et quod vis fac -- Is that enough?

Came across again Augustine's famous dictum (on a theology site run, fittingly, by a fellow named Ben R. Crenshaw!)
It can be translated roughly as: "Love, and do what you will /like /please".
Simple question:
If an architect loves the game and his craft, will doing whatever he likes/pleases be enough to ensure of good golf course?

Peter,

I played a course with Joe Bausch this week that was designed by a retired banker and professed 15 handicap who saw an opportunity in the 1990s to get in on a growing game and designed and built four golf courses.

It is likely he loved what he was doing.  But he had no idea at all what he was doing.
