The Ridiculous to the Sublime from the Cheng Du Crew
« on: February 23, 2020, 11:09:34 AM »
This past week, a group of current and former GCA members held a clandestine meeting at a secret location (Chendu23 Restaurant) in northern NJ to solve most world problems and pontificate on the state of golf in the year 2020.   While our plans for world domination cannot yet be revealed, nor our collective solutions to world problems, we can report that Steve Lapper was entrusted to order for the table (with but two notable objections).

Since I am one of the few of the aging participants who ever developed any technical skills, I have been asked by the leaders of this cabal to post these pictures for the amusement of the rest of the civilized world of golf.

Let's start with the ridiculous.   I'll start with the question, what kind of MORON jumps into a Florida lake filled with alligators and water moccasins and who knows what else to try to play chip shot from the edge of the green in a meaningless match?   You may want to remove any children from the room first, or at least shield their innocent eyes.

Said MORON happens to be a member of a terrific golf course in northern New Jersey that flies under the radar and has had a very successful two-stage restoration performed by Ron Pirchard in recent years.   From the talented camera of Evan Schiller, here are a few shots of Mountain Ridge, this year's host to the Metropolitan Golfers Association Open tournament.

Back to the ridiculous.   You think Steve ordered enough food?

I will rest easy knowing this.  ;D

Pat wouldn't be doing that if he couldn't ground his club in a hazard without penalty. ;)

"I'll start with the question, what kind of MORON jumps into a Florida lake filled with alligators and water moccasins and who knows what else to try to play chip shot from the edge of the green in a meaningless match?"

I'll tell you who: a professional ball buster for whom Alligator & Water Moccasins extend professional courtesy to...and thus retreat from an easy meal.

This green-inked apex predator winters in Southern Florida and moves back to the "swamps of NJ" in the summer. He has a mean short game and a tongue that can, and will, throw any competitor off their game.

He belongs on GCA's Most Wanted list for sure.

Looks like a great event.  I note that if Steve had ordered less food, he could have used the savings to pay for body doubles.  Just saying....

From the background it looks like they were one room from outdoors in back.  Also, where are all the logos?.

I resemble that remark!!

For the record, the take-home doggie bag didn't amount to much. Maybe it was just the fact that Policano only wanted Italian....in a Sichuan restaurant!!

Sorry to interrupt your regularly scheduled comedy programming, but it's interesting to note how nearly every person at that table has played a major and integral role in improving, and likely turning around, some of our better courses here in the NY-NJ-PA metropolitan areas.

One can merely look at the direction places like Yale GC, Sleepy Hollow CC, Sunningdale CC, Paramount CC, Cobbs Creek GC, Hackensack CC, Ridgewood CC, Vineyard GC, Mountain Ridge CC, Garden City GC, Hollywood GC and Winged Foot have all gone over the last decade and safely attribute much of the progress to folks part of this very motley crew.

I would like to take this space to congratulate everyone there for willing to be an activist in finding and preserving the very best golf possible at their respective venues.

Let's just say that staff had to roll in a new barrel of Duck Sauce.

Do you know how many ducks they had to squeeze to get all of that sauce??

Hopefully it didn't involve any ducks with a Jim Thorpe, PA mailing address!

Joe,

I'm happy to report that Buddy Feathers and Miss Eleanor are happily ensconced in their luxurious Winter Quarters, far from the carnivorous appetite of Mr. Mucci and his fried crunchies.

Seated from left to right:

  Dr. Geoffrey Childs-Corey Miller-Mike Moss-Mike Cirba-Mike Policano-Pat Mucci-Neil Regan

Standing from left-to-right:

Steve Lapper-Bill Brightly-David Baum- Mike Broom (Superintendent at Hollywood GC)- Rob Wolf (Greens Chair at Hollywood GC)

PS...No ducks were harmed at this event. I cannot, however, vouch for Mucci wading through that pond.

Never ever publish the destination of this crew pre event as the collective IQ of the free world would be threatened by a hit. But please notice me so I can attend and drop the number

Missing the Mucci here!

Wow, Mountain Ridge has removed quite a few trees since I last played it. Need to get back there. Such a fun course!
