I was watching Jack and Snead make the turn when I saw your post... Highly recommend!

They both hit 1-Iron on 17 and came up 50 yards short... How is that for contrast?!

It's incredible how far Snead hit the ball at 50 plus on long fairways.

The greens look shockingly soft and SMALL.

Was there some work going on. In a few spots it looks like huge areas of dirt.

The course played short!

They may have set it up to protect an aging Sammy?

Biggest takeaway was every bunker shot seemed to come from a plugged lie or at least fried egg, using soft beach sand in the bunkers.  I would really like to trace the idea of perfect bunkers back to see who came up with it first.  I am sure it was just a lot of things that happened to happen, but I always figured it started with some tour pro or another.  Doubt it was Jack, because he did try furrowed bunkers at Memorial, or maybe it was him, and 20 years later he realized bunker perfection had gone too far.

Or, low handicappers at exclusive private clubs, who seem to think they should be able to hit it anywhere and still play a fairly easy shot.  Don't know, wonder if anyone has traced this phenomenon back?

Man, Jack's shot out of the bunker on 7 was tough.  I really wish I had Snead's swing of all the ones in history.

Those conditions do make you realize why players tended to chip with lower loft back in the day.  That chip that Snead had on 18- there's no way a player today uses a 9 iron when it's sitting down in the grass like that over the green.

That 9 iron probably had 47-48 degrees of loft-minimum -(my PW growing up was 51)-todays Apex 9 iron 38.5-their PW is 43!!
and the conditions...

Back then we were taught to hit whatever iron that would get the ball rolling quickly. Most of us were taught to chip with a seven iron just off the green and as we got farther from the green add loft.

I never understood this and did the opposite as there are more imperfections on the ground than in the air to cause your bill to go offline, including, leaves, twigs, seeds, etc. Maybe that reflects the quality of courses that I played growing up.

I think a pitch & run for most golfers reduces the odds of a really poor shot compared to trying to use a wedge.

I almost always use my 60 for chipping or pitching and vary the length of swing. IMO this is easier to become consistent at then trying to figure out which club to use AND how hard to swing.

Actually I think the opposite is true. I think of how hard I’d hit the shot if it were a putt and chip accordingly.
