Old Courses in France ? Help !
« on: July 04, 2019, 07:52:10 AM »
I'm trying to do a bit of research on a couple of courses in France laid out by Willie Fernie. One was in the Pas de Calais region and the other was at Cannes. Fernie was there about 1896. Anyone know anything about them ?

Niall,

is the 'Old Course' you refer to
Mandelieu? If so I have played it a few times but it is definitely a Colt which was almost intact when I played it.

I did a bit of googling and there was a course in Cannes from 1891 which I think is the one you refer to. Colt was there in the 1920's I think to redesign it rather than being a new course. I'm pretty certain the Fernie reference is from 1896 (don't have the notes in front of me) so if it's the same course then Fernie did a redesign at most.

If anyone knows the history of the Cannes courses better I'd be interested to hear.

The Pas-de-Calais reference is perhaps more intriguing and not just because I'm not long back from the area. Again from google I don't think I managed to find anything of the right vintage. The oldest that I think I found was Wimeraux (which I played) and it was early 1900's.

Again, all help gratefully received.
