I have never found a definition of the term as applied to golf architecture that I was totally comfortable with.

I agree.  Lots of times folks refer to features as quirky which don't strike me a such.  For instance, Pennard is often referred to as a very quirky course and I think there is actually very little quirk there.  I only know quirk when I see it.  That said, I do think quirk can be built, but its hard to pull off well.  However, in some cases, wait 50 years and it can be brilliant!

Quirk by design? Quirk by accident? Quirk because construction methods wouldn't let the designer/builder do anything different? Quirk because something changed later?

Sean, I too think quirk can be built and therefore my definition is broader than Mr. Doak's "part of the site" requirement. Hence what TD did at the right side of Pacific Dunes #8 fits my definition.  "Natural" quirk like stone walls and rocks and things already there may often be better than manufactured quirk, but to me all quirk makes me smile and accept fate--for better or worse--on a golf course. That is the good thing about quirk from my perspective.

6 with the exaggerated and small push up green that falls away on 3 sides, and 16 with the massive ball collecting swale right in front of the green at Pac Dunes are more quirky to me that 8 or 9.

I still think Engh and Stranz are the owners of quirk in America.
