Fire at Burnham & Berrow
« on: August 06, 2018, 12:28:02 PM »
It seems there has been a large fire at Burnham & Berrow over the weekend.   Does anyone know any more about what damage has been caused?

According to their Twitter feed the playing surfaces were not affected and the course is open for business as usual. Great news! They were very lucky... with some hard work by the fire crews!!!

Jeepers, the extent of the damage without touching the course is remarkable.  I reckon the fire department must have done fire breaks and did an excellent job as well.  Although, the fire did reach very close to the 13th tee and not far from the 8th tee.

Looking toward the reservoir and 9th green from just right of the old 13th tee.

Looking toward the 11th tee.

No fire damage, for those that don't know, below is the new 6th tee shot.  An old tee was resurrected when the 6th used to play down the current 13th fairway in the opposite direction.  One can clearly see short grass on the left which leads back to the daily and shorter tees.  I must say, its a big improvement.

A look at the green from the new back tee for #9.  I am less convinced this is an improvement.

Nothing new, just a look at one of my favourite bunkers...perfectly placed...#8.

Fairways and greens are firebreaks, the grass is far too short to burn.

No damage done really, great opportunity to find some new places for tees.

That is not the old 6th tee, but it is a similar place, great improvement.

Could be even better if the renumber the holes so you start at the 2nd and finish with the 1st, flip the practice ground and new house.

Is the “revised” 6th green in use yet? And if so how does play compared to the previous version?

Same 6th green Thomas, it has been redone a couple of times though since 1976 ish. The Old 6th hole green is/was 250 yards away from the present site more down the line of the current 13.

Would that be same entrance into the Club? If so wouldn’t the road to the new clubhouse be going straight through or in too close a proximity to the reversed practice ground?

Not really sure Ryan, but they own land to the left of the PG I think. The new clubhouse would service the Channel Course better, look out to sea as well. I would imagine the club could build it all for zero if they could adapt the present clubhouse and car park into a number of buildings/dwellings.

The new clubhouse location would solve the 1st tee/18th tee conjestion. With a few more back tees they could be having the 2026 Open Championship!

In the old days, many clubs used to set fire to the course just to clear the gorse.

As Adrian says, no damage done.

It would be interesting if planning could be had for a house near the channel.  However, the present set-up is about as good as it gets...house, proshop, range, chipping area, two practice greens, 1st tee and 18th green all in a very cozy arrangement with good views to the course.  In my experience, few clubs can match it.

Chappers...I never knew fairways didn't catch on fire.  In any case, the fire line leaves a ring shy of fairways which makes me think controlled burns were used.  Now there really is a great opportunity to plant the dunes with proper grass.
