Paspalum Greens
« on: May 05, 2018, 05:29:00 PM »
Is it possible to get Pospalum greens in Florida to putt in the 9-10 range on a consistent basis? Played on some today in Fiddlers Creek and while they looked great they where some of the slowest, stickiest greens I’ve every played. Some members told me they are generally day in and day out pretty slow. Coming from Hideout a couple of days before made them seem that much slower. Are courses still seeding with this grass?

Rob,

I do not know the answer to your question but am curious to know if the greens putted true?

There were a couple of courses in the Myrtle Beach area that switched to paspalum greens several years ago -- I really liked the paspalum on one of the courses. They were pretty quick and smooth... it was almost like putting on astroturf. However, it doesn't stay warm enough there year round for paspalum to work. I think every course that tried switching eventually lost their greens in the winter and switched back to a different grass.

Regardless, I did have a really good experience playing on paspalum greens once, so I assume it's possible to have them in great shape.

Rob - if I’m not mistaken, the Ocean Course at Kiawah has paspalum greens. They played a major championship on those greens, so yeah, I think they can be made to play at fast speeds.

I would say no. You had to hit them so hard and they slowed down so fast they were difficult to pick a good line. Also difficult to read.

Also I’ve played Kiawah and these greens putted nothing like the greens there. Maybe it’s just the way they maintain them.

Casa de Campo has paspalum greens on 3 of it's 4 courses.  (4 out of 5 if you count the two extra nines.)  I'd say they run at around 10 most of the time; never much more and sometimes less.  They are very true, and I don't find them "sticky."  Unlike the Bermuda greens on La Romana Country Club, they have very little grain.

Little known fact-Certain areas of the state start to go into summer maintenance mode by May 1st, therefore less resources are devoted to green speeds. They have also had some major concerns regarding water in the Naples area so they could even be maintaining them higher to minimize stress.
Old Collier Golf Club has paspalum greens, also.

May River course including greens is paspalum and i like it. The greens put true and can stimp up to 12. The shaved green surrounds are a little sticky and require some getting used to. Right about now the fairways are great
