Of course, golf is very important part of living there. You will remember Bighorn has hosted these events:
The Skins Games, U.S. Senior Match Play Challenge, Battles at BIGHORN and the LPGA’s Samsung World Championships

Interesting - do you think they are trying to make up for the course design? Looks like they even went the wrong way in so doing to my taste

No making up for course design. Yes for selling memberships to the 1 %.

Initiation Fee: $250,000.Annual Dues: $30,800. Cost of housing starts at 1.5M+.

Ironically, another high end course, Mirasol in Palm Beach Gardens, FL has 2 courses by the same architects as Bighorn and they just spent 40M to upgrade their club house. Mirasol is member owned unlike Bighorn.

Every year I get older I spend more time at and around the clubhouse then I do on the course. It's plausible deniability when the wife asks where I'm going.

One of my best golfing memories of the year was spending a couple of hours on the patio of Saint George's Hill clubhouse with Matt Dawson just watching other golfers enjoy the course. I don't think you can underestimate the value of the beautiful structure behind us.

It makes sense. If it's city living you want, live in the quintessential city, New York. If you want a movie with an ape in it, cast the biggest one you can find, King Kong. And if you want prestige and an ornate and spacious clubhouse, why go 2 or 4 or 6 times the average square footage? Go 20 times as big. To quote Tuco Ramirez: If you're gonna shoot, shoot - don't talk!

The final comments in the article:

If the clubhouse serves it function, Hubbard believe it will be used for years.
“This clubhouse has got to be timeless. It has to be something that will stand for another 25 years, and that’s what we’ve got here,” he said.

Thanks, John, for citing timeless sentiments.

I see the course on my descent into PD (by car, after a beautiful drive thru the mountains) on the way to the mother-in-law, who lives on Suncrest, nine holes for 15 bucks (walking).

I played Bighorn last year with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the UK, who almost fainted when informed by our forecaddie (driving his own cart) that walking was strictly prohibited at Bighorn. The very antithesis of UK golf, methinks.

Many years ago, a tube containing unmarked topo maps and no cover letter, showed up at my office. I put it in the corner figuring someone sent it for some reason. A few months later, Jim Colbert and Dee Hubbard called and said they were doing a second course at Big Horn.  The reason given was the first clubhouse was too big and they felt they needed the second course and new residences to fill it up, since it seemed like a ghost town.  The course was supposed to be designed as an 18 hole loop starting at tunnel under the road, near the clubhouse.

When GE Capital got involved, they brought in Fazio.  I was still working with Colbert/Hubbard on other projects and happened on a meeting with them at the club, where I saw Fazio's plans.  They included a separate clubhouse.  When I asked why, they shrugged and said "Fazio is such a great salesman."

I was chagrined. As course owners elsewhere, those two guys wouldn't overspend on a clubhouse anywhere, but have no such problem at their home club.  For sure, they understand the top tier club market better than I do, so I hesitate to comment and offer opinions on it, but I still recall the initial conversations.

I played out at Bighorn this past spring.  It is an amazing place/property and the golf is pretty darn good as well not to mention the bass fishing  ;D    There are a lot of smart businessmen out there and I am sure someone did the math (if it even matters at a club like that) before pulling the trigger on the clubhouse.
