Little Aston Putting Course
« on: August 10, 2017, 01:49:33 PM »
I played Little Aston on a golf trip to England in September of 1985. I don't remember the course all that well, but I do remember buying a Ben Hogan "25th anniversary" wedge out of a barrel in the pro shop and the very cool putting course at the club.

If you have never seen the putting course, here is a nice pic:

The idea of the putting course is great, but the reality is I have never seen it function well as a practice green or a putting course.

Aiken has something quite similar and it does a bit better job of it, not great though.

At Thun GC in Switzerland they have an 18 hole putting course which certainly used to get quite a bit of play from golfers and non-golfers alike. It was not good to practice on though and the club had a separate practice putting green as well.

Putting greens linked with flower beds are surely high maintenance.....although the club in question is a more moneyed club than most.
I've seen this done elsewhere at less moneyed clubs and unless a member of staff or a member of the club is a green finger enthusiast prepared to spend a lot of time on the detail the quality of the putting green and of the flower beds is vile.

Its not that moneyed, more old moneyed.  Its a seriously good place to play and drink.  Really lovely old world heathland

A putting green linked with flower beds is a new and wonderful concept to me. I will come back to this photo. Thanks for posting, David.
