Rolling Hills Country Club, Palos Verdes

The course was announced today as the site of the 2018 PAC 12 Championship — despite the fact that it won't even be open until this June. David McLay Kidd is completely rebuilding the club's old course.

Does anybody know more about this project? It looks like the club acquired a very large chunk of land that it did not own previously which will be the site of 6 or 7 of the new holes and the practice facility. They're even moving the clubhouse.

There's some good information on the club's website, http://rhccvision.com/, including this rendering. That entire top-right parcel is the new property I was referring to. The current course includes the area with the holes on the bottom and also the area in the middle that will now have houses and the new clubhouse. Interesting and huge changes — basically a rebuild of the entire club, it looks like!

Matt,

I got the scoop from the USC coaches, they were blown away by the project and picked to host the event there over some big time LA courses. The big thing is they found a sand quarry next to the property and the course has some awesome views of downtown LA. So now the course will have a sandy base, rolling hills and good vistas. Will be interesting to see the final product. Here's my quick writeup I had on it when the story broke. http://www.friedegg.co/blog/rolling-hills-2018-pac-12-championships

Did they buy the quarry?

I am not positive but from my understanding they own it. I am talking with DMK next week on my podcast and will ask him.

I'm not sure whether they own the land or not myself, but I can tell you some sort of land swap occurred. It was supposed to 10-12 years ago while I was playing RHCC as my high school course. Delays and the housing crash pushed the new course's construction back over and over.

I really don't know much about the new course, other than that a member I've talked to is excited for the range/short course and to have a course that can extend to 7,300 yards (the old Rolling Hills was about 6,100 so there's a bit of a complex with the membership, more than most even  ;) ).

I'm excited to see how it turns out - the bottom half of the holes in the diagram are along the same corridors as the original course. I'm concerned about the bottom 4 holes which occupy the same land as the old 1-3 and 18th. Those areas may still feel a bit cramped, but the rest of the course should have more room than the old course.
