Question on St Enedoc visit
« on: January 11, 2019, 05:43:02 AM »
Taking 16 folks down to Cornwall end of May... usual group as much about the social side but the golf is quite important. We are staying right next to St Enedoc golf club so it is handy.

Agenda:

Thursday = Perranporth
Friday = St Enedoc Church
Saturday = ?
Sunday = Bude & North Cornwall

I have only one question for those in the know:

For Saturday, am I mad to consider St Enedoc Holywell course over Trevose?

Reason I am considering this is it saves us an hour in the car, the round will be much quicker, we are playing greensomes and time away from the golf course is valuable for this group.

Clearly Trevose is the better course but does Holywell stand up?

Thanks for help from those few who might know.

I would play Trevose (having played there last Sept) as there are some Colt there plus it is improving and still undergoing changes by M+E. It is much more undulating than the photos show and that green overlooking Constantine Bay is well worth it.

You could play Holywell before or after your round on St. Enodoc.

Alternatively there is the Point at Polzeath not far from St E - I have not played there however Tim Lobb has been reworking the course over the past few years.

Cheers

Ally,
As you say Trevose is the better course and there are also the recent M&E alterations to view.
As to the Holywell, holes 1-3 and 13-18 play over some lovely humpy-bumpy land, where some of the original main course was I believe, with quite a bit of quirk as well. The par-3 15th is particularly fine.
Given that there’s plenty of daylight in late May in Cornwall you could probably add the Holywell onto one of your other play days.
As well as the main course Trevose also has two separate nine-hole courses, which I think may have been upgraded somewhat.
Whatever you decide have a great time.
There’s also Newquay, which hasn’t had much comment on here but I’ve heard it surprisingly good in a quirky way.

I played The Point last summer and was pleasantly surprised. I haven't played Trevose but due to the distance I'd spend the day at The Point and if time permits, play the Holywell also. The Holywell holes nearest the clubhouse are really good and connect in a 9-hole loop. The rest move over farmland and were obviously added to make a full 18.

There is also a cross-over 9 on the St Enodoc Church course that could be a late-day option.

The idea here is to reduce golf time, not increase it, hence the question on how good Holywell is.

Because if it is actually a decent round of golf, it gives us approx 2 1/2 hours back on our day versus playing Trevose.

Thanks for the responses.

One other question driven by above; should I be playing Newquay ahead of Bude & North Cornwall?

Whatever you do be sure to go to the Point for dinner one evening. Jeremy, Eva and their team give the best hospitality I have ever experienced at a golf club. Bar none

Ally -

Is there any reason you would not want to play the Church course at St. Endoc a second time? That would be my recommendation.

If its the group I'm familiar with then play the Holywell. No doubt about it.

I was almost swinging the other way until I saw this post.

You know the group Robin, although this is about finding time for surfing and beach cricket rather than necessarily extending time in the boozer.

Can I take by your post that Holywell is sufficiently enjoyable even for someone like me? Or am I going to be cursing myself for not getting to see Trevose as I help my companions look for yet another ball?

Thanks

There's no doubt Trevose is a much better course, but give yourself a break and a day off! You'll fly around the Holywell and have time for other activities. If you go to Trevose you won't.  Rock is one beautiful spot to relax in and the Saturday is your only chance.

I’m fortunate to be a member of both and have only just returned from a Christmas break down there. Feel free to message me if you need any extra information or local guidance

Thanks Ben,

I will do so over the weekend, more around things like Mariner Inn vs Rock Inn and any little idyllic hideaway pubs or shacks or restaurants... (we are staying at St.Moritz hotel unless you’ve significant advice on that front also). Appreciate the offer of help.

Hise the Wise has convinced me on the Holywell. He knows my group and I might be staying an extra day or two anyway so could possibly fit in a quick round at Trevose or another on the Church.

Rock and Padstow are destinations for many holidaers and taking the ferry across to the Ricks seafood is a blast and even tho expensive it was one off the finest seafood dinners I have had you just need to book well in advance
So I mean Holywell IS FUN no need to put notches on the pistol

Ally,
Best be forewarned that the last week in May this year is a school holiday week in parts of the U.K. including Cornwall.

Two recommendations on dining - I think The Dining Room in Rock for quality and value is the best restaurant within 20 miles. It is small and a large group could present a problem although they might arrange a private seating. I've eaten there a dozen times and always had a great meal. The Mowhay Cafe in Trebetherick is a short drive from Rock and has very good food and friendly atmosphere.

Ward, Craig,

I’m heading down to Cornwall and Devon later this year so thanks for the dining recommendations.

I’m playing Trevose early so was planning on staying in or around Padstow for convenience. Will try out Ricks that night. I think he has three or four places in the town.

Playing St Enodoc in the afternoon on the same day so can eat at the Dining Room or Mowhay Cafe after my round before heading north to the Devon courses.

Your party is too big for the Dormie House B&B but Trudy and Anders run a great shop if you split up.  A short walk to St Enodoc and they are members.
 Are you still coming to South Carilona?

Ward,

I’m not actually with Ally’s party so would have been ok for the Dormy House B&B. I checked it out and it looks very nice. Would have been ideal if I was playing St Enodoc first thing and Trevose later but the only tee time I could get for St Enodoc was in the afternoon so have to play them that way around. Thought it would be better to be closer to Trevose/Padstow due to my early start there.

Yes, still coming to SC. We’re staying in Charleston for a couple of days but will probably try to get down to see Hilton Head whilst there. I’ll drop you an email with my dates.
