Great Non-UK/Ireland Links Course
« on: July 02, 2016, 12:59:15 AM »
There is a traditional links course in Europe that looks like a Doak 8 or 9 from pictures that is under rated but I can't think of the name or country.  Please help!!!  I believe one GCA'er said it would be a world top 25 (or something) if it was located in the UK.

Thanks in advance.

There aren't many really true links by my definition.

How about Falsterbo in Sweden?

Some great holes but not an 8 or 9.

Other contenders have to be Northern Europe and most are difficult to categorise as true links, even if they'd have you believe they were.

Not sure of a relevant DS rating but I think the reference might have been to Granville in Normandy by Harry Colt.

Pardon me for asking this question ... but .... Is there an agreed upon definition of "Links"?

The three Dutch courses definitely qualify so likely one of those.

Other than that, Falsterbo is the next best.

Then you might have Granville (never seen it), Bundersland (new and all created but still links), bits of Le Touquet perhaps.

Then you get down to courses that are no more than a Doak 5.

Mike,

I'd say it's Royal Hague. I recall a few weeks ago Adam Lawrence and possibly Tom Doak / Mike Clayton mentioning it as second behind Morfontaine in Europe.

I played it during BUDA XI (2013) and it certainly is great.

Not sure it qualified as great, but if you are after the most isolated and hard to get to links, then there are a couple way at the bottom of NZ's south island

One I played a few years back, Southland Golf Club  (Oreti Sands) at Invercargill  is a hoot.  Done up by Greg Turner its one of those lovely, wild and understated places, with little more than a shack as a clubhouse.

Great course, but only for the travel enthusiast

I think the course I was thinking of must of been Royal Hague.  I have gone down a wormhole looking for the thread and comments but have come up empty.  Here I thought the internet was perfect.  Thanks to all who responded.

Mike, if you want to find the threads with Royal Hague in them.

Type in Haagsche into the search function and you can see many of them.

This is because the real name of the course is not in English.

It's Koninklijke Haagsche Golf en Country Club.
