I love the Oakmont locker room. the cane lockers are classic, but to me its hard to beat Shinnecock.  I love the clubhouse and the fact its a Stanford White design really elevates it. The clubhouse that wasn't mentioned by anyone is Long Vue, which is great looking when you drive up to it.

+1 on Long Vue. Another favorite is Ardsley in Westchester County NY which also boasts some incredible views of the Hudson River. If brick is your thing both of these will cause your jaw to drop.

Here's Longue Vue:

I too am a sucker for a great clubhouse, especially those that fit with the feel of the club overall.  The right clubhouse (and/or the right locker room/men's grill) can be the perfect start and end to a round of golf and really impacts my experience at a club. All that said, I can't believe we have made it two pages into a thread and the Chicago contingent hasn't mentioned Shoreacres.  The wonderful clubhouse sits up on a bluff, looking out over Lake Michigan (our own inland sea).  It has the perfect balance - understated and classy.  It just fits so well with the course. Rather than post one of my pictures that can't do the clubhouse justice, I hope that Jon C. can post a couple of his from his recent photo tour of Shoreacres.

Tim, here's Shoreacres:

Are you talking about beauty and look in photos? I ask because I am surprised to see Newport on this list. I agree, it has a nice look, but the inside is so empty it felt like an out of commission movie set to me. The best clubhouses are the ones that are used. Garden City is great. Nice mesh lockers, spike marks on benches etc etc.

Keith:
You're right in that Newport's clubhouse can feel empty and "unintimate," although I do like the lower levels where the proshop and the locker rooms are.  That said, what I like about Newport's clubhouse is that it is as much a part of the golf course as any of the holes themselves.  It dominates the landscape, you can see it from every hole, you start and end there, and you pass twice (after 9 and between the two par-3s at 13 and 14).  As a kind of centerpoint, it anchors the golf course.  All that said, if we're talking insides -- locker rooms and bars -- then you're right, and I'd much rather hang here:

(Myopia Hunt Club)

or here:

(Merion Golf Club - those taps!)

I think we are on the same page.

Lastly:
This is obviously my fault. I have apologized to Jon Cavalier in a PM. I obviously showed lack of judgment and decorum, and for that there is no excuse.  I believe this is an issue between Jon and myself, for which I am to blame. I appreciate the comments from other posters, and I will try my utmost to use this as a lesson for future behavior.  Regards.

Brian:
Your apology is appreciated and accepted, and I likewise apologize for snapping on you yesterday - I suspect that we both had long days, and I do appreciate you reaching out.

For those above like Ben and Finn who know you and report that you are a fine gentleman -- I am sure that they are correct, and I have no reason to doubt their statements.  As I said before, I don't know you and have never met you personally.  But I hope I have the opportunity to do so in the future.

I do want to be clear on one thing -- if you ever have an issue with something I post on these boards, I hope that you will not be shy about telling me so. If you think I've said something stupid or that my photos suck, feel absolutely free to say so, and I will never hold it against you.  This is a discussion board, and I am always more than happy to enter into a discussion.  I just happen to think that more is to be gained for everyone here if those discussions are based on the content posted, and if we all engage each other with the courtesy and decorum that we try to show one another on the golf course.  I'll do my best to live up to the same standard.

Thanks,
Jon Cavalier

Happy to see decorum restored!

Btw... Would add Mountain Ridge & Quaker Ridge (lboth Clifford Wendehack Designs), Friars Head (much better food than Oakmont  ;D  ) and Austin GC,

Cheers!

Austin is really special when Lynn buys a drink as Crenshaw wanders by!

Unless things have changed the Oakmont locker room has no AC. As a sweater, that is a no go for a club in a humid climate

You might avoid Chicago Golf Club. The air is not conditioned.
