HVCC is a 1926 Ross, with the original routing intact. There has been work done there at various times, but the most recent work a few years ago by Brian Silva was an extensive renovation/restoration. While it included changing the greens from bent to Champion Bermuda with appropriate contours, there were some bunkers removed and restored to the original design.
It's a par 70 with only one par 5 on each side, and it ends with a long, uphill par three back to the clubhouse. HVCC was one of the courses in Bryron Nelson's 11 consecutive win streak (Durham Open, I believe?), and I have heard it said that the 11th hole was one of Nelson's selections for the best 18 holes from those 11 courses. The story continues with Hogan taking the club to task because a creek that ran down the right side of the fairway had been piped at the orders of a Greens Committee chair; I have no idea if either or both of those stories are true, but I've heard them for years.
It's a terrific golf course, and that ranking doesn't surprise me, although I hadn't seen it. I don't think the club especially wants (or needs) any widespread public attention; it has been the old-money club in Durham since it opened, and still is. They stay, by choice, quite a bit under the radar.
