The US of course has exactly the same problem - people from Canada and Mexico are Canadians and Mexicans, but the USA is hard.  And so you latch onto one word of your title.  Being American or British is a lot easier to say than being United Statian or United Kingomish.  Its convenient but not technically correct.

It is not the same:

A citizen from the USA is officially (i.e. by its own government) called a "US citizen". There is no such thing as an "American citizen"

A citizen from the UK is officially (i.e. by its own government) called a "British citizen". There is no such thing as a "UK citizen"

This has taken a strange turn for a blatant access thread. I would love to play match at the AELTC some day but it was not to be this year because of the conflict of the big tournament. As a matter of fact I changed my flight to directly into Glasgow as a result. London will have to wait.

It's a shame you did that. Wimbledon is truly an amazing event. Far better is the satisfaction of sitting on centre court and and walking around the outside courts during the early round matches than any hour you could spend hacking up the turf and slipping to tear half the muscles in your legs.


It's one of the great experiences as far as I'm concerned and but before golf I was a full on tennis guy who thought he could make a living at it. All the Grand Slam Tennis events are worth seeing and far more entertaining than live golf events in my opinion.


Although a trip to Scotland for golf is also not too bad. ;-)

It's my first trip. I will only be there 6 days so will be based out of St. Andrews. The itinerary and company are world class. I will be blogging on the New England Journal of Medicine website as this will be a test of human endurance and consumption. I will take two pics, one before, one after. Come to town, we won't be hard to find.

Wimbledon Park have got themselves into a bit of a pickle, the All England Club have made an offer worth around £40k to qualifying members. However the club had a cut off date for members to be eligible for a payout, the problem is they gave every member a vote so the new guys vote it down. Eventually the qualifying members will have to give those who don't qualify some sort of payout to get the vote through. Every year they stall the value of the offer will reduce.

A friend is a member of the All England Club, I don't think the members get to play the show courts.

I don't know about member play on all the show/stadium courts at the All England (aka Wimbledon). But I remember reading that the only time there is play on the Centre Court by the members during the year is when a Ladies doubles game is invited to play for an hour or two on Centre Court a day or two before the Wimbledon tournament begins.

I don't imagine most members of the AELTACC are there to play tennis and croquet any more than most members of Augusta are there to play golf.  Its about getting good seats for two weeks a year and being able to wear the green and purple tie.

My favorite thing about membership to the AELTC is that along with 375 full members they have approximately 100 of what are called temporary playing members. An interesting practice similar to great golf clubs letting top players access to their courses. But oddly, these temporary playing members are separate from the honorary members. I assure you it is a much cooler place to be when the tournament is not going on. I'm having good feelings about this.

Tennis is obviously a harder sport to play competitively at age. With handicaps a golfer can be strong in his 70s+.

So the member was elected to the seeding committee, at his first meeting he tried to say something but a senior member and well known ex-player told him it would be around 5 years before the meeting would ask him for his opinion.

It does however demonstrate that golden rule in any competitive sport - the best place to view it all is from the club house with a bloody great fence betwixt you and the plebs.

Nothing quite like have a golf tourney at your home club and watching the oiks glare at you as you enjoy  a drink or 7 on the veranda.
