This Tillinghast course just closed up shop forever last Sunday it seems (houses apparently being built on it).

So I paid a visit last Saturday with GCAers Matt Frey and John Shimony.  And I'm glad I did.  It was plenty of fun with a nice mix of 1/2 par holes.  Easy as heck to walk to boot.

Here is a pic of the par 3 2nd hole:

I knew the closure was certain when I noticed all the sprinkler heads had been removed!

I like to add a scorecard to my photo albums, but none were available on Saturday.  If some GCA'er has a clean scorecard of Island Hills, can I borrow it?  Or could you take a good zoomed photo of both sides of it and send it along to me by e-mail?

See, I dread that I'll someday play a course where I'll be unable to collect a scorecard. If I had gone with you guys this weekend I be laying in bed catatonic right now!

Mike: John was able to wrestle up a scorecard from a nearby dumpster, but it was pretty dirty. I took a picture of both sides and was able to clean it up a bit in Photoshop, but really, I would need to rebuild the whole thing in PS to make it look decent. That's time this PS novice doesn't have!

I didn't really want to mention Shi$ went dumpster diving.

I am definitely not above dumpster-diving for a scorecard.   The very idea of playing a course and not being able to add one to my collection is sending chilled shivers down my spine.

I'm serious.   It's an affliction.

Joe, I sent you a PM. I have a pristine scorecard.

To be fair, there was no diving...the scorecard was simply near the dumpster on the ground.

Mike: As the world goes digital, do you ever think, 50 years down the road, golf courses will only offer digital scorecards? I hope not, but it's an interesting thought...

No diving?   Where's the challenge in that?  ;)

I'll likely feel the same way about "electronic" scorecards as I do about the demise of the record jacket and full vinyl album, reduced first to cassette and CD and now just electrons.   Not very good, but hopefully I can just print them on some good stock paper.

Back to the course: I found Island Hills to be a great track. Some may have not liked how flat a few of the holes were (Nos. 3 and 4, particularly), but they were still very good golf holes, in my estimation. That being said, there was some pretty cool movement in other parts of the property, including a significant ridge running through a few of the holes.

My favorite hole was No. 6, a 298-yard par four. There is a large ridge that drops perhaps 100-120 yards off the tee, which plays with the golfer's estimation of the hole's length. Also, picking the correct side of the fairway will make the approach a whole lot easier (or harder if missed).

All in all, it's sad to see a gem such as this go. It seems like a course you wouldn't mind in the least to play every day as a member. Rest in peace, Island Hills.

Jeff, thanks for the scorecard.  The photo album above has now been updated!

I just found out this news today from my parents, who live right across the street from the course.  I've played it a few times, including in a US Amateur qualifier. The guys tore it up that day (I didn't!).  I always thought it was average, but with great greens.  What did you think of the greens, Joe?

I did enjoy the greens.  I found them to be good, maybe even very good.  And it seems over time some green space had been lost.

It should be noted for all that fellow GCAer, Jason Blasberg (my offline mentor in golf architecture) is going down in history as the last and Greatest Club Champion of this Club.  He will forever be the undefeated Champ!  I want to congratulate him by bumping this post.

I played this course on the golfweek amateur tour a couple of times. Including once birdieing 18 to shoot 71 and win by 1  :) . I really enjoyed it (not just because I played well) and this is a great shame.
