 ??? ;D

Interesting Jim Sullivan speaks of his tee shot on #6 leaving him a sixty yard chip . Playing with long drive champ Mike Dunaway in 1983 I happened to catch one square in the center of my McGregor Tourney persimmon and might have hit it inside the 100 yard marker. Dunaway proceeded to fly it into the left front bunker about 85-90 yards further. My caddy and I just chuckled walking out to the balls and he in a show of solidarity told me that I putted a lot better than Dunaway .

Might be too much activity to clear right of #1, but clearing the hill off the sixth tee would be really neat . Lots of guys might bite off more , which would add to the strategy that already exists. Quite sure those who cut the corner would pay the price more than profit .

Archie and/or Sully--ever hear any members wanting to take PVGC back more towards the original? Any hard core historical architecture/design guys?

And yes I know the membership's opinions are mostly irrelevant :).

in 1997 or '98 I was caddying in the first flight of the member-guest and a big guy from Charlotte flew it right in the center of the fairway about 20 yards short of the front apron on #6. I never did Google Earth it to figure out how far it was. 320 or so I'd guess.

I thought you were probably overestimating, but I had Google Earth open, so I checked.  Your estimate is right, your man had to fly it 290 from the back tee to carry to the fairway, and roll out to 320 to be just in front of the green.  It's 360 yards from the back tee to the middle of the green as the crow flies.

And 20 feet uphill Tom...pretty amazing because you don't really feel it for some reason.

Jeff,

I've never had, or heard that conversation. They've done a good job adding tees near the beginning of fairways for the older guys that might be most interested in that type of restoration. It's a funny question...a good one because it's still more wild and woolly than most any other course but it must be a far cry from the early days.

Archie,

I can't imagine there's any intent behind the result but between those two holes, 1 and 6, the easier hole to take on the corner in an ultra aggressive play carries well less reward in my opinion. In other words, the 60 yard shot into 6 isn't all that much easier than the 120 yard shot. #1 however would be worth some risk to get up to the flat but I just can't see myself making it more than 1 in 50 times...

What about trees right on 1? Would people take a more aggressive line there?

Maybe...front tees on 1 and 6 would certainly make it inviting for people that carry it 280 or more, which is well fewer than we all think. Even if you're in that camp there's really nowhere to go unless you're on the very front tee. The 50 - 60 yard pitch into 6 isn't any better than the 100 - 120 shot...which might be the easiest shot on the course. The 60 yard shot into 1 is considerably easier than the 120 - 130 shot from just short of the road...but exponentially more difficult to attain.

If both greens were visible from the tee, would I ever try to cut off more than I do now? Not likely...but the holes sure would be a lot cooler than they already are.

Jim,

# 1 might have been visible in 1931, but, I don't believe that # 6 green was ever visible from the tee.
