Here is a complete list of all of the courses with photos in

Does anyone think this photo might be from one of those courses?

I bet you it is the 13th Hole on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley! I know Maxwell worked on the Old Course at SVCC, not sure if he worked on Grace.

Thanks Joe.  And thank you Bob for solving the mystery with the photo that was originally marked as an ANGC pic!  The current 17th (old 11th) at Melrose looks like a dead ringer.

Great detective work, Joe.  It goes to show that working the shoe leather is a big part of historical research wheather its traveling to find documents or traviling to courses.  Keep up the good work.

Ed Oden deserves the credit John.  He's done most of the work.  I'm just sort of riding his enthusiasm for Maxwell and Melrose.

Now if we could just find any other PMax courses in Philly.  It is hard to believe he had an office here and Melrose was his only course.

Note:  I'm thinking he helped Philmont North finish up their course.  Just a hunch.

Joe,

Is there any chance the club could move in the right direction with bunker work (that original stuff looks awesome!), reclaiming putting surfaces, and tree work?

I could be wrong, but since they are taking outside play, I'm assuming they aren't exactly rolling in cash.  Hence, I don't expect anything big, just maintain what they have.

No doubt the place could use some tree work, as well as sprucing up around the creeks.  And I do think there is lots of recoverable green space on the handful of Maxwell greens remaining.

The Melrose name did not last long, as by 1930 the Penn AC bought it and renamed it Penn CC.  I don't know for how long that lasted.

This from the March 1930 issue of Philadelphia Golfer magazine:

I believe the Penn Athletic Club of Philadelphia did not last long, ending in 1942 if this web page is accurate:

Joe,

If I recall correctly, the sale never went through.  Unfortunately, all of the club archives were lost when the club's historian died.

On Pete Trenham's History of the PGA Philadelphia website, there are references to Melrose in 1930, 1932, 1934, 1936 and 1937 including this reference to the Section Championship:

1933
August 28, 29 & 30---Huntingdon Valley Country Club---Huntingdon Valley, PA---Par 70
Host Professional---George Low, Sr.
Winner---Charles Schneider, Sr.---Melrose Country Club---9 & 8
Runner-up---Joe Brennan---Bankers Country Club
Medalist---Howard Slattery---Valley Forge Golf Club---70

I'm pretty sure the sale happened Bob.  I have too many newspaper articles from 1930 saying it happened.  But it might not have lasted as Penn Country Club more than a couple of years.

This from Pete Trenham listing the pros at the site early on (The Penn AC of Philadelphia renamed the club to Penn CC when they acquired it):

Schneider, Charles W. Sr. "Charlie"     Penn CC (Melrose Park, PA)   HP           1930-31
Schneider, Charles W. Sr. "Charlie"       Melrose CC (Cheltenham, PA)   HP   1932-33
Schneider, Frederick "Fred"                   Melrose CC (Cheltenham, PA)   HP   1935-43

Joe,

Thanks for clearing that up.   Looks like the Penn CC name lasted two years.

According to Pete Trenham's History of the Philadelphia PGA, Bankers CC became Oak Terrace and now is Talamore.

Talamore's web page years ago had a nice writeup of the origin of the club by James Hilty.  I can't seem to find it anywhere now.
