It's maddening to say the least...!

Followed by a sweet 76 yesterday. Rooting for Geoff is like supporting the Red Sox in years past... don't get your hopes up.
Next!

It turns out that Geoff's first design job will be Bonnie Doon GC in Sydney, which coincidentally I became a member of yesterday, the very day that the firm was presenting its renovation plan to the members.

It was a fascinating few hours hearing Mike and his associates Michael Cocking and Ashley Mead speak about their plan for the course, which they seem quite confident can be lifted from outside the Aussie Top 100 to inside the Top 25.

Mike was a man in demand, so I didn't get the chance to say hi, but I spoke at length with Michael and Ashley, who are two really articulate and interesting fellas who were really generous with their time.

To my eye, looking at the plan, the result could be something out of the mould of The Berkshire (with fewer trees) - lots of undulation, great short par fours, par 4.5 holes aplenty across varying terrain, interestingly bunkered mid length and short par threes...

Work starts in May and the conservative estimate for completion is March 2012 - that's for five renovated holes and two brand new holes. After that the rest of the course gets the treatment, though there is not yet a timeline for that.

Really exciting times.

More praise for work done at The Lakes by the apparently ubiquitous Clayton and Co.

Scott

A decent day to become a member  :)

Did you primarily look at this course because of the anticipated works by Clayton & Ogilvy ? how long is the drive there from Cronulla ?

The drive is half an hour in light traffic, KP.

Yes, Clayton's work was the primary reason for me joining. I guess the timing was perfect given I landed in Sydney four weeks ago and started looking around for a club (or continued looking, really, I had done a fair bit of homework from London), heard about the renovation, saw the plan and loved the look of what was planned and then happened to be admitted the day he and his crew were presenting the plan.

Watching the work take shape will be brilliant.

I presume by "light traffic" you mean early in the morning for an early tee time  8)

BD is a bit like my home club - has potential - is currently a mix mash of holes but could be something really good. It looks like BD's development will be finished in our lifetime something I'm afraid WGC may not.

On the face of it - it seems you have made a good choice.

Hi Scott,

It was nice to meet you last night.  I didn't ask your surname but should have as I would have recognised you from here.  I can count on one hand the number of times we will talk about a famous hole and the similarieties between one at whatever course we happen to be at, so when you not only knew the 3rd at Royal Cinque Ports but turned out to be a member there it certainly took me by surprise!

We're extremely excited abut the Bonnie Doon project - the land is fantastic and it has oodles of potential.  The heathland courses around London have certainly played a part in our concepts for the use of heath and the bunkering and there is a good opportunity to build some work thats a little different from everything else in Sydney.  The hill on the 3rd (new) for instance will hopefully look a little similar to the short hill and bunker (carved into the heath) at the 2nd at Swinley Forest - albeit it will be a drive hazard.

We love building short fours and its unusual to have so many, but they'll all different and built over very different bits of ground so it shouldn't feel too repitious.  Theres also enough width to create lots of space and lots of options on the other holes as well so all in all we can't wait for next year to come around.

Hope to see you next time we're up.

Best wishes,

Mike

Congratulations Michael. Ogilvy is always the best quote on tour. It will be a great team.

Of course he is the best quote, as he is usually just paraphrasing Mike, isn't he?

Cheers Mike, I was as shocked to be asked "are you familiar with that par five at Royal Cinque Ports?" as you were when I said I am a member there. Strange.

For anyone interested, the renovation masterplan can be viewed via the club website.

It's interesting to see the holes that are included as examples of how the new work might look.

Congratulations to the firm for the appointment at Shady Oaks in Texas.

I'm not sure but this may be the first job in the U.S.

It is. It should be a nice job starting with making something of the 'little course' made famous by Ben Hogan and his practice sessions out there.

Mike:

Do tell how your firm based in Australia won this job?  Seems like quite an impressive assignment considering the history with Ben Hogan.

It's a bit of a mystery really .We were somewhat in the running for Trinity Forest and someone there liked our presentation and also knew someone at Shady Oaks. Mike Cocking and Geoff went down there after the PGA Championship and spoke to them - and they obviously a good impression.

Thanks - and it could do with some because it's a really good piece of land with potential to be a better course.

Out of interest have many, or even any, Aussies been successful in getting architecture work in the US before?

Greg Norman obviously.
Bruce Devlin with his partnership with Robert Von Hagge.
