It's been awhile since this residential course has been mentioned here. Matt Ward had a thread on his Top 25 Arizona courses 2 years ago.

Take a tour:

Hassayampa Golf Club in Prescott, AZ has been closed since 11/1/2012. Desert Troon Golf took over at that time and has closed the course until they decide on which way to proceed.

Hassayampa filed for Chapter11 last year. Palmer Mgmt company took over from  Desert Troon, the original developer .

The deal mentioned in the Plan fell through.

The club was selling monthly memberships last year but did not open for play in April. The course is now closed and apparently not being maintained. A friend bought an annual membership last year.

I'm trying to find out more info.

Apparently, the members bought the club from Desert Troon in 2008. Then, in 2011, the members relinquished the club back to Desert Troon. Then, Palmer Mgmt was hired to manage the club. Palmer wanted to buy but that deal fell through. The course has been closed since Novermber, 2012.

This is sad news. It's a beautiful area and a course I had always hoped to get up and play.

My good friend who I went to the Golf Academy with was the Assistant Pro there from 2008 to 2010.  He then took a job at Tonto Verde down in the Scottsdale area.  I think he knew that the future was bleak.  I went and played up there in 2009 during the summer, it was pretty nice.  I remember thinking that it was a nice place for people to go that want to escape the summer desert heat, I also remember that there was the standard afternoon monsoon that rolled in during the middle of our round for about an hour.

Tough times right now for private clubs.

A couple summers ago, I recall that they were one of several private clubs that started to allow some public play. Rim Club in Payson did the same, so did Seven Canyons in Sedona and Quintero nearer Phoenix. Seven Canyons and Quintero have now become de facto public courses, though I guess some membership options and privileges still exist. Both Rim Club and Hassayampa stopped allowing public play. I had assumed that meant they were on more sound financial footing. Appears not to be the case.

I do think the Rim Club is doing OK. They are slated to be a part of Mickleson's M Club project that should be announced later this year.

I understand that there are major water problems with the city of Prescott which are holding up any sale. Also , if the course were to be sold, the cost of the water problems and getting the course ready for play again would cost about 1.5M.

Possible buyers exist! The club may go semi-private. Interesting article and, as usual, the readers comments are entertaining:

Good luck to them. I wonder if they will try the private model again, or go semi-private as so many of their ilk have. And even if they do, can they draw enough rounds? Prescott has grown over the years, certainly, but also doesn't necessarily lack for golf options.

It looks the new owners are trying to keep it private and they've changed the name to Capital Canyon GC:

The new owners are planning to reopen the course around July 4. Work is being done.

"We've leveled all the tee boxes, we've seeded the tee boxes," he added. "We're really working hard on getting the irrigation system right. We're bringing in the technology so that we can control it remotely."

The course's lakes are currently being dredged to make them deeper and to "clean them up a little bit," Raymond said.

"Come March/April, if the temperatures are right, that's when we're going to top, dress and seed (the grass), and then the golf course will transform overnight," he said. "Right now, you go out there and (the grass is) still kind of a dormant brown. You'll see that change to a nice, lush dark green."

Raymond said work will be completed in April to improve the drainage on the course's bunkers, followed by the application of fresh sand. Cart paths will also be refurbished.
