Po anna or Poa annua
« on: June 22, 2015, 12:16:23 PM »
I am not a Latin scholar but I am pretty sure that the proper pronunciation for this species of grass is Poa annua with no silent letters anywhere.  Why do folks on TV insist on calling it Po anna?  To save on two syllables?

By Jove!,
Only their gods know how the ancient Romans might have pronounced it.
My Latin teacher was a Londoner, so I speak it with a cockney twang!
I like the full Poe a Ann you a!

Wayne, searching the site I found the exact same thread started by you in 2006:

Indeed Michael -  and that thread didn't get much traffic.  Given all of the Poa discussion regarding CB I wondered if anyone else what have any comments on why the word(s) are so mispronounced.  Remind me to bring it up again after the 2024 US Open.

And Greg Norman?  Or is Queensland considered the south?
