Count me in as another Presidio supporter.  I lived nearby the course for about a year and often walked over with a few clubs for twilight golf (which was always a good deal - seemed like the proshop would charge $20 or less after about 5 pm).  Lots of interesting holes and fun quirk.  I also agree that it is tougher than the card would indicate.  That blasted 13th always seemed to play way longer than the yardage suggests.

Late in the day - especially in the summer when the fog would roll in - the course had a serious element of "mysticism".  I have vivid memories of the fog coming in through the cypress trees and shrouding sight lines.  Walking the course around dusk in the fog was always a cool (almost spooky) experience.  Making the imagery even more vivid, on these foggy evenings I would periodically see an old homeless man walking in patches of trees and shrubs on the course (this is a city course after all).  With walking stick and long white beard, he could have easily passed for rumplestiltskin!

Both the Presidio and Tilden Park (like too many courses in the Bay Area) have serious drainage issues during the rainy winter months. They are best avoided roughly from Thanksgiving to Easter.

The drainage on newer courses in the area is usually much better. The Metropolitan GL (in Oakland), Rooster Run (in Petaluma) and Adobe Creek (also in Petaluma) all drain pretty well and stay playable thru all but the worst winter rainstorms.  Since its rehab, Harding Park also drains pretty well.

Tilden has spent a lot of money on drainage in the past few years, and conditions in the winter months have improved.  But it is still going to suffer from its clay base and being built on a hillside with water draining down.  And it is over-watered.

How did this turn into a drainage discussion.

I mentioned because of the severe / radical lies there.

Similar to the Presidio.

Your prior post referred to conditions at the Presidio as "damp, wet, slippery.......long, uncut grass."  I was simply trying to explain why those conditions occur in the winter months at both the Presidio & Tilden.  On a real foggy day, they can occur in the summer at the Presidio as well.

I don't think there are any severe or radical lies at Tilden.

There are a few holes at Tilden where you can have a sidehill lie.  #2, if your second shot is in the 140-165 range.  #10, second shot is slightly sidehill.  #14, second shot.  #15 second shot, slightly sidehill.

#1 is of course uphill, and #3 is downhill, but most drives on #3 end up in the flattish section short of the path.  #9 is uphill, but it is a wedge or 9 iron shot.

Coincidentally, there is an amateurgolf.com tournament at Tilden this weekend.

A few photos of the frilly bunker work at Presidio from this past weekend that has been in process for a few years now.  At least 3 holes were done since my last visit last March.

There was another more recent thread about the renovation but I attached the photos to this thread as there was more commentary and opinion of the course.  (the other topic is here http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=43b2353225f852e902a8d22f2a556f52&topic=57430.0 ).

The course was in fabulous shape, firm and closely cut fairways, tee shots had to be shaped properly to stay in the fairway on many of the holes.  The greens were good, some were a bit thin of grass but that is all too common in the winter on a tree lined course.
