From The Golf Section podcast, showing what the superintendent at Springfield (Mass.) Country Club did in an effort to have healthy greens come spring. There was a freeze-thaw-freeze spell in the region that has a lot of superintendents worried. Facilities without a decent size winter maintenance crew won't be able to apply this strategy.

That's pretty common up in Toronto because we get lots of freeze and thaw cycles going into Christmas.
... and then it gets really cold

I think players vastly underestimate what goes on in the off season.

I think most have no idea. Because it happens every year in your area I wonder if golfers are more understanding. They will, for the most part, not be understanding in New England.

Very good documentary on what he's doing to protect the clubs asset.  Like to see him blowing snow back on the green after cleaning it off.  Unfortunately though sometimes all that work still comes out with a result that isn't good.  We had a lot of damage around Chicago after last year.  Lot of different methods on what guys did, but still a common occurrence of dead Poa.  Sometimes hard to beat Mother Nature, do your best and can end up losing no matter what.  Can't get people to understand that either.

Wasn't Ice, but an open winter several years back where the Nebraska chapter of supers got on the news to describe why mother nature killed their greens over the winter.  A great PR move.

Ian,

Would you say Toronto's biggest ice related disaster in any given year is....the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Still talk of a second NHL team in Toronto? Any idea on names? How about the Toronto Winter Kill?

Wouldn't the existence of a "second" NHL team presume the existence a first?? Not sure that's entirely accurate...

I'd go with the Toronto Duffers considering any Toronto hockey team will generally be planning for the golf course by early January.

When we immigrated to Canada (1970), there was some talk of Montreal, but we ended up in Toronto.

My father bought me a Leaf sweater - right away - to fit in.
... I had no idea that the gesture would make me miserable for the rest of my life.

They will never be good, I've made peace with that fact, and I will always follow the team.

A sportswriter friend of mine told me a story about when he was covering the Hartford Whalers at the Leafs and how Conn Smythe, wearing spats and carrying a cane, came over to talk with Dave Keon, who was then playing for the Whalers at the time, but had won the Conn Smythe Trophy in '67 for the Leafs.

One of his favorite memories.

Ice is just becoming "part of the routine" in the GTA.

I for one, love that the Leafs suck. And think that a new team won't decrease the delusion of Leaf fans. My name for the new team... Toronto Fords (all credit to the former mayor who did a cracking job).
