Have a look~Another review of the Confidential Guide
« on: January 01, 2015, 05:16:25 PM »
With as much absence of humility as I can muster, have a look at this bit that went live on New Year's Day: http://www.golfwrx.com/268669/review-tom-doaks-confidential-guide-to-golf-courses-3/

I'm especially intrigued that Joe Passov's piece also went up with 24 hours of mine: http://www.golf.com/courses-and-travel/architect-tom-doak-reviews-britain-and-irelands-top-tracks-new-confidential-guide

Cracking stuff, Ron.

Reference the Golfwrx article, Cruit Island is actually in Ireland not in Scotland as stated.

I'm intrigued because I thought I was the last guy to the dance by two or three weeks. I know that other reviews were out there last month, but for GolfWRX, I needed to wait a bit.

Edited to properly recognize Ireland.

For those who haven't seen Thomas' thoughtful photo tour of Cruit Island: http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,58468.0.html

Great stuff, Ron. Finest review of the CG I've read yet. Nice to see I'm in good company over on GolfWRX. Also with an absence of humility, that's my piece on Innisbrook just below yours ;D

RoMo,
This was probably the best review of a golf course book that I have ever read. Terrific writing …. well done!

The collective noun "a smack" in "a smack of Tom Doak's  friends had a glance" is terrific and I had never come across it before.
I looked it up and "a smack of jellyfish" seems to be the the accepted collective …. but TD and his three musketeers definitely have a lot more backbone than that nae doot!

Anyway, very good stuff,

Cheers Colin

So original it didn't belong in any of the other threads on Doak's new book.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Do you get paid for this stuff on Golfwrx?  Posting individual threads like this is a great way to drive traffic.  A blogger got to eat.   2015 is the year of the RoMo.

I have addressed the other posts on this thread via PM, but John K. brings up a point that merits a public response.

I do not get paid to write for GolfWRX. I do so because I enjoy having a creative outlet for my thoughts on golf. I'm better at some things than others, and the editors at WRX don't let me slide if my research or my writing is not up to snuff. I actually went from September to December  with no publications there, simply because my material needed revision.

I did mention to another poster via PM that I don't normally promote my work on this site, as it's not proper. Since this particular piece dealt specifically with a book germane to our efforts on GCA, I made an exception.

Ron -

What can I say? I am obsessed with the editorial standards guiding the flamboyant prose of these hybrid web sites.

"Nadie" is misspelled.

"MacDonald" is misspelled.

"The first volume measures a tidy, 180 pages"
A comma divides this compound modifier.

"Whether the former or the latter"
This clause refers to things that are not in opposition.

"The Gazetteer, therefore, is a sequence without rankings, of clubhouses and their modest, their lunches and their settings."
This sentence is missing a word.

"principles" is misspelled.

"of the courses we trod and golf"
These verbs are of different tense.

Ron,
Did you purposely wait until TD left for South America, ala the Friday night news dump, or was the timing purely happenstance?  ;D

Whilst absolutely valid, applying such criteria would have prevented Dr. Mac from ever making it to print.

Does anyone know what courses in GB and Ireland are rated on this scale? I don't have the book and couldn't seem to find out on google.

James, et al.,

289 courses across the isles are rated. If you PM me, I can answer if a course is or is not rated.

I thought was a very nice review and well written. The Passov piece however seemed to rely very heavily in simply quoting the book such that if you didn't already have it you might wonder why buy it when you've seen the highlights via this article. I suspect it was maybe written in a hurry to meet deadlines rather than providing much of a considered view.

That is odd...did you try to click the icon to the right of the envelope (email icon) below my name?

In any case, I've sent those ratings on to you.

Why not just send him a link where he can buy the book?  When does stealing end and permission begin?  I bet you could get more hits by copy and pasting more sections and pictures of the book for your articles.

I did notice Passov provided a link in his article. Did you, I couldn't get through it?
